I hear ya, Banff is prolly one of the best places to visit, but it wouldnt be the top choice to live, unless you are some adventure freak. I mean in winter, pretty much the whole town is hosed down with snow and ice.
OTOH Vancouver is much more pleasant with some job opportunities.

Vancouver is overrated. The setting is splendid, but the built environment disappoints. What redeems the place is not what's been built, but what's not been built. Over time, even that negative virtue will be lost.
I think the prize should go to Paris. I know that's the conventional answer, but the conventional answer happens to be right. Cairo isn't pretty, but once you learn how to cross the street, you can sort of get to like the place. It grows on you. Amman in Jordan can be strikingly beautiful. I'll never forget my first sight of the city, approaching from the south on a sunny afternoon. Perched on hills, all the buildings finished with white brick or cement, Amman looks like the proverbial City of Light. |

Well-travelled friends whose opinions we value returned from Russia saying that St. Petersberg was the most beautiful city they had ever visited. It is of course mere co-incidence that my wife and I will be there in September this year

Yuk.
With the exception of Rome I refuse to vote. Thank God for late mentions of Paris, Tokyo (personal fav.) Barcelona and Bath. Oh, and Venice.
For aesthetic education ( by the way Cairo - c'mon man ) I feel obliged to nominate the following ... Kyoto Florence Vienna Prague Cape Town Copenhagen ain't bad. For beauty, which is after all the criterion, I think Vatican City. Beat that per square yard of pretty ![]()

What idiot compiled this list. No Sydney, no Paris, and Moscow gets in ahead of St Petersburg. Personally I refused to vote.
Even though I am from melbourne, and thus a blood enemy of the harbour city, Sydney on a sunny day takes a world of beating. Venice & Florence are gorgeous & leave Rome for dead (though I do take the point on the Vatican. Hue in Vietnam is beautiful in a strange way. Wedged in between the mountains & the sea with a lovely river running through it, yet enclosed (the old bit anyway) by a giant crumbling fortress. Quite the setting. Kanchanaburi in Western Thailand is more a town than a river, but it has setting to burn. It stretches out along the Kwae River (yes, thats the Kwai to us [i]farangs[i]) with spectacular mountains seeming to hug the far bank I'll also pitch in a vote for Paris, even if those lovely wide boulevards were primarily to ensure that any potential revolutionaries would be shredded by grapeshot without any damage to the nice buildings. In the US I think New York is stunning, especially if approached by sea. San Francisco did the same trick as Sydney & grabbed a great location (though not as good visually). My one out of the hat is Washington D.C. The monumental architecture is everywhere and it is brilliantly laid out. Lots of pretty places I haven't seen yet, but I'm off to Phnom Penh in 3 weeks, so I'll tell you how it stacks up. |

Dc!
Bigfella sir! Top call.
I adore D.C. . It may well be the stentch of money and power. I'm not quite sure that it qualifies as "beautiful". Impressive, yes. I cannot help but think of St. Petersberg as a Stockholm wannabee. In the UK I really should have mentioned the centre of York and without reservation Cambridge. Edinburgh is quite dramatic but not beautiful. I would say the same of NYC. San Francisco is charming, but again ... I must wear out indulgence by adding Madrid and Monaco. I'm not sure if the latter gets extra kudos due to the inhabitants being simultaneously beautiful and ugly. ![]() |
