Vermont. I will try and upload some pictures I took a few years back when on vacation. The coutryside was simply jaw-dropping.
The Catskill mountains in upstate New York are also simply amazing. Maybe it's the fact that I am a cityboy that makes me have such an affinity for picturesque countrysides.

Venice has to be the winner. I don't believe there is a single city in the world that I would describe as 'beautiful', with the closest to this description being Venice. I am also very surprised that Oslo is in the list but not Stockholm, and Rome but not Paris, Florence or Venice. Apparently, the best city in the world to live in is Vancouver, accoridng to various socio-economic measurements. I would certainly rather live in Vancouver than in any of the above cities, but I would certainly not describe it as beautiful. Most of the buildings are modern carbunkles. As for the most beautiful country, it's probably between Canada, Italy and Switzerland, and possibly Sweden. Last edited by marklv : 01-30-2008 at 19:38 PM. |

I must protest the paltriness of some of my favorite cities in North America; South Vineland NJ, Washington DC, Raven Rock PA, Columbia SC, Elisabethtown KY, Columbus GA, Dulce NM, Sierra Vista AZ and many many more.
My vote would be with Manhattan Island; the token on your list from what I feel to be the greatest, largest and most superior nation on "God's Green Earth", as representative of The Megalopolis where it is centred.

Glyn,
Have travelled extensively, could recommend many international destinations. In fact, as a liberal internationalist in the style of Wilson-Bush I might consider myself a "global citizen". Many forward thinking Americans recognise our great national investment in the planetary body politick. I am, of course, a politically moderate "Bullmoose Republican". I do love "overseas" travel as you term it but have chosen to exercise superior stewardship by focusing on recreating a la "RV" whenever possible, since I've fallen in love with this style of touring. I'd also like to see all 50 States of this glorious land I love, before my demise. Incidentally RVing might increase, together with all modes of land transportation in the US, following implementation of the "Real ID Act" which will essentially overturn Traditional Federalism in our land. Reportedly at greatest peril; US Airlines who are always being bailed out at the taxpayer expense for various poor reasons. Looking forward to my next overseas excursion Plvs Vltra |

I've yet to be to a place that's surpassed Ireland beauty wise, though I agree that Newfoundland is definetely up there - St John's is a superb city, and the countryside on the island is spectacular.
