South Park

Given all the recent media attention that it's been given, South Park has come back from several years in the dark into the minds of people once more. Since I'm a HUGE fan of the show, I was wondering how each of you guys feel about it. BTW, if you think it's nothing but fart jokes, don't even bother commenting.

I have a HUGE PROBLEM WITH THAT SHOW.

It isn't broadcast on British terrestrial television!

At least I don't think, any longer.

The success of the show is due almost completely to the two creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Both are absolute geniuses- both comedic and in the intellectual sense. They have the ability to hit an issue right on the head like no other comedic writers can. What's more is that they often can mock two sides of an issue without showing bias towards either one.

As far as their politics go, they tend to lean more to the right than the left when it comes to politics in the show, although conservatives receive their share of bashing as well. Both Matt and Trey are Libertarian.

Both are also very, very talented as directors and songwriters. With the aid of Marc Shaiman, the entire score to South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut (as Team America and many in-episode songs) were written by Trey Parker, who attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston for some time. Both creators are members of a band called DVDA (Double Vaginal, Double Anal) that has a few songs recorded and has played live several times.

But obviously their greatest achievement is the creation and direction of South Park. Several South Park-esque short films were created before the cartoon became a show (these can be seen on the internet, link provided below). South Park has become famous for its depiction of current events (in some cases, very current: the capture of Saddam Hussein was mocked a few days after his capture; this is due to the terrible procrastination that goes on when creating new episodes). Although scatalogical humor is present, most episodes present some sort of moral or practical revelation.

It's a truly great show, way underrated at times.

Don't hope for a sequel, I'm afraid. They said that the frustration and difficulty in making that movie nearly killed them.

But I loved that movie too. Hilarious and also showed the directing abilities of Trey Parker. He's also starred and directed Orgazmo and Cannibal! The Musical, and both Matt Stone and Trey Parker starred in BASEketball.

Sequels generally suck anyway.

Yeah, it'd be pretty hard to improve on that. Perhaps it's for the best.

South Park is going to be a tough nut to crack when it comes to getting stale because many of the episodes are based on current events, and with a never-ending supply of ideas, it could go on for quite some time. That and the fact that the creators can turn something absolutely ridiculous into something hilarious. Matt and Trey signed another contract for another three seasons, each with 14 episodes, bringing the total of all the episodes to about 180.

I died over the AIDS song, I'm So Ronery, and the one ripping on Pearl Harbor and Ben Affleck.

"Our base was attacked by a giant socialist weasel..." (Michael Moore)

IIRC that line was only in the unrated version, which has a few additional lines and an extended puppetsex scene.
