in 1991-1994 the leaving Sov./Rus. army sold their weapons on market(!) . A AK74+ 2 clips and bucket full of ammo = 200-300 USD, RPG ´Mukha´ was bit more . My friend was in criminal police, they had a Strela SAM (without warhead, that they gave away to EOD people) standing in cupboard as a trophy. Est. paramilitaries ´confiscated´ a Rus. train echelon on some small railroad junction , thus i´ve seen a MDK-2 ditch-digger in a garrison where it ended . And so on....
Chechens had quite a collection , even L-39 jets

Hrm, wonder how Georgia, Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Poland feel about that comment.

"Gorbachov? Why does anyone listen to that loser? Isn't he about the WORST leader in recorded history? Lost his country without even a fight?"

i cannot believe you just insulted him!? so low of you. without a fight? what kind of fight would you guys like to have seen? he was literary arrested and confined to his home with no communication of any kind for nearly a week! or perhaps real-world scenarios from "the sum of all fears"... you should be thankful that he helped the country to transition from one regime to a new one with fairly minor casualties.

the reason SU was disbaned was because we (Russians) got tired of feeding, in one way or another, all the other members of the so called "union". which kept us down. we are WAY better on our own! thank you very much. ...consider this: Georgia opened a museam of Russian occupation, and yet, 1) a Georgian was in charge of millions of deaths in Russia 2) many people from ex soviet republics, that were so eager to separate (including Georgia), are coming to Russia for work.

sure, the US LOVED Russia in the 90s when she was down, weak, and agreeing to anything. high interest loans, foreigh countries (including US) grabbing as much as they can without having to be responcible, razvorovali stranu gadi...

Russia changed, but the West hasnt. it is no surprise that as soon as Putin came to power and closed the lid on the whole freebie frenzy the West started hating Russia again and went back to its old ways of poking Russia, making negative propaganda, and etc.

i spoke to one mccaine supporter recently and he said "well we can do whatever we want because we won the cold war." yeah, typical American arrogance that pises off 2/3 of this planet's population. you know what thats called? a winner's complex. sure lets disban the UN as well because it certainly does not serve US interests anymore, and those pesky Russians keep poking at US for rampaging all over the world and breaking some sort of thing called "international law" every time America goes on conquests under false pretences. pffft.

when the first time a Russian bear flew over US carrier group (even though American Generals said "so what") the US Media was trying to make such a big deal! when that blond lady on Fox News (Megyn Kelly) said "well, the cold war is over, but apparently no one told the Russians" i wanted to bch-slap her. Those routs are well known, and are filed ahead of time. if the US Navy chooses to put one of its carrier groups in the path. it is not Russia's problem.

"I think Germany is REALLY happy to have Poland as a fairly solid buffer against Russia."

yeah and it was the Soviet Union that started operation Barbarossa on june 22 1941. Hello?

"I sympathize with Ukraine, ...and HOPE that Russia doesn't destabilized Ukraine too much in its inevitable attempt to get it back."

what exactly are you sympothising with? the cultural genoside the current Ukranean government commenced against its own citizens, those who happen to be russian-speaking? Is there a ban on spanish language in the US, tv channels? radio? books? movies? music? NO I dont think so. in fact there is a requirement to have taken at least 2 semesters of a foreign language either in high school or college/university.

"...inevitable attempt to get it back."

There we go changing the truth again. Russia does NOT want Ukraine! Russian government said that it will claim back the Crimean peninsula which was a GIFT to Ukraine by Kruschev after ww2 as a gesture of friendship. back in the 90s Russia agreed to keep the current borders, again as a sign of friendship, in exchange for Ukraine's neutrality from any military blocks. Instead the Ukrane's government became anti-Russian and wants to join NATO. yes it is their right, sure. in this case if they are breaking the agreement then why is Russia supposed to fulfill its obligation regardless?

If US is but one member of NATO, then why arent there British, German, French, Spanish, Italian or Polish bases in the US? the truth is. Nato is America's playground. im sure US would not be happy if Russia was to head SATO that South Americans are thinking of putting together, and put its bases and equipment there as well. or how about a Russian radar in Cuba, ABMs in Mexico and a Russian Army Base or two in Canada? i can see the American propaganda headlines now: Russians are Coming! Russian missiles to be placed in Mexico and an Army base in Canada! we are surrounded!

i think the US would be quick to remember about Monroe Doctrine and threaten to remove by force. Perhaps Russia needs to announce its own Moscow Doctrine citing the same thing?

by the way... im not saying US did it on purpose. im saying that a flyover is not as big deal at all as the Media was trying to make.

but yes i do think that the US government is covertly trying to pull Russia into a second cold war to contain, maybe even prevent Russia's Growing economy and limit her influence in the world so that theres no poking from the russians about america's disregard for international law.

As i wrote previously, the amount of ´feeding the union´ is not one-way street . When you look at numbers from each pyatiletnik , you see the percentage of schools and shops rising and so on. BUT if for an example in my hometown SU set up one of the hugest air-force bases. In years it grew, it had apartment complexes, shops, hairdressers, kindergartens and so on . All was closed to locals, but it went to official statistics, which showed quite a growth. Or when SU built some huge factories - it all needed new roads, infrastructure, housing, railroads, teachers, bureaucrats, beer-sellers,streetsweepers. But 80-90%of inhabitants came from east to man them. They turned out products that went back to SU, together with our products. Back in end of 1980-s there were hordes of russians who came here to shop, simply because there was quite nothing to buy back home. The ´tourism´ trips from Pskov and farther- busload after busload discharged tobus station, like locusts And of course emptying our stores of their meagre supplies so there was nothing to sel to locals. The era of ´defitsit´- remember that?

And just to remember you that the produce was so scarce because of the idiotic orders from Moscow - to grow corn in these latitudes or to try new ways to grow potato.
And just how many Russians are working abroad in former SU or West?

AFAIK Berezovski, Abramovich etc. were citizens of Russia when they started business

Russia changed, but the West hasnt. it is no surprise that as soon as Putin came to power and closed the lid on the whole freebie frenzy the West started hating Russia again and went back to its old ways of poking Russia, making negative propaganda, and etc.

... after Russia took back it´s Stalinist anthem etc. etc.

yeah and it was the Soviet Union that started operation Barbarossa on june 22 1941. Hello?

yeah and the poles are still pissed off of SU attacking them on 17th. of September, 1939. Which gave SU the border with Nazi Germany ?

Losing Ukraine to the West would be the ´geopolitical catastrophy of the 21st century´ to Russia. Not losing Crimea. Without it and only with rather small Belarus Russia cannot hope to gain political/economical/populatition gravity to somehow equalize with China, EU or US.

If US is but one member of NATO, then why arent there British, German, French, Spanish, Italian or Polish bases in the US? the truth is. There are German base on US soil, sort of , for AF training . And NATO base in Canada, both for AF training . Of SATO - did Russia free them during the war or something? Has Russia done anything to them that would deserve some influence in their organization?
Cuba had Sov. bases all along till Sov.Union collapsed, don´t think Americans protested much.

i think the US would be quick to remember about Monroe Doctrine and threaten to remove by force. Perhaps Russia needs to announce its own Moscow Doctrine citing the same thing?

I see paranoia is still a Russian cultural characteristic.

Russia isn't strong enough to provide a realistic Cold War opponent for us anymore.

In so far as weapon availability is concerned and I am not commenting on the issue as such of what you are discussing.

One can't lay his hands on an RPG just like that.

It can be got if another country gives it to you.

Or, if you have an organisation, flushed with funds, to buy it from the arms black market.

Or, if you seize a govt armoury.

Legally, you have to furnish an end users certificate.

I guess former Yugoslavia was full of weapons , starting with leftovers from WW2 . Heh, even here some people had quite an armouries after WW2. Knew a guy who had 5 machine guns , he just went to forest after WW2 and picked them up, hid them in his cellary. Plus ammo. De-activated them after 1991. In Chechen case , didn´t the russians soldiers sell them everything they needed ?

Why does no one seem to remember the August 1991 coup (tanks shooting at parliament on TV and all that), which effectively dissolved the USSR?

I for one slept through most of the first day, including a airborne troops convoy going past my window . My parents had went to Moscow to meet a group of British youth-exchange people. The british had courage, they didn´t go back at the same flight, but decided to stay to see ´´history in making´. And they arrived couple days later to independant Estonia .
Sorry for off-topic remark.
