I congratulate all on a holiday of a victory over fascism!!!
(I know that you the Europe celebrates it on May, 8th, because of a difference in time) PS: Parade on the Red Area (together with military technics) - good tradition. This tradition it is a lot of years, and I do not understand, why this tradition causes an agiotage in western journalists.

Captain, Thank you. That was a very impressive celebration for your new President and Prime Minister. Anyhow, I suppose your Prime Minister is new... somewhat. ![]() Well, whether it's parades or leadership, there's nothing quite like carrying on with a good thing when you see it. Your pride is evident, that's for certain. Let's hope that victory over fascism is permanent. ![]()

Why it is perceived in the West as spiteful action? Unless it threatens you? I hope, that the fascism really is for ever destroyed. |

Captain,
"Why it is perceived in the West as spiteful action? Unless it threatens you?" Many don't know if Russia does threaten us or not. Your parades were once brutal displays of raw power and were unmissed except by intelligence analysts who prized the opportunity to view the latest in Soviet equipment. They served to intimidate us and inspire you. I note no functional difference now in this parade's purpose. Have you noted the almost complete absence of military parades in the west along with the absence of armies to march at such parades. It's not a big thing. Not even in America. Even on our military bases they're largely viewed as a waste of valuable time. Desert Storm, W.W. II one-time ticker-tape parades without tanks. Big cultural difference. If Americans are turned off by this display so familiar to an ignoble past, then you must understand that many Euro-softies will be utterly horrified at new images from Red Square so similar to frightening old images. |

Seems to me though that the military saber-rattling on the part of the Russian government has more to do with eliciting support from the public and instilling patriotism rather than threatening other powers. Anyway this parade looked really cool. It's good to see their armed forces back to strength in recent times. Thx, Nebula82. Last edited by nebula82 : 05-10-2008 at 04:32 AM. |

Military parades also pass all over the world: on June, 13th in France; on October, 29th in Turkey; on January, 26th in India; on September, 9th in Northern Korea; on July, 5th in Venezuela. Military parades in Russia is too ancient tradition, it existed even before education of the USA. Passage of technics is partially a tribute to parades during imperial time (when went horse build and guns lasted), and partially - memory of parade on November, 7th, 1941 when the technics left from the Red Area directly in fights near Moscow. Yes, this distinction of cultures. I for example do not understand, what for in the USA flags (schools, streets) everywhere are hanged out, and the symbolics of a flag is used everywhere - from cowards up to benches. Probably, this your patriotic education, but I consider that it is "symbolism" and in some part "false patriotism" (superfluous expenditure of a paint ). |

And even the British do it sometimes - like Trafalgar naval parade in 2005 .
Parades best side is that it gives to people like me a chance to see the size of some equipment . These 2S19 MSTA howitzers are huuuge.... But one funny thing met the eye - if all Dessantniki/Naval inf. and so on soldiers were 180-190cm. and in top form , the generals leading them were quite .... err... out of shape ?

![]() I did not wish to mock, it were the nearest pictures which I have found. However the fact remains the fact: in the USA it is a lot of symbolics of a flag: from underwear and T-shorts up to flags on houses, etc. We too have flags, but at us it nevertheless is more moderated. |
