I think this misconception is great, and a sign that things never do change. I know a few Cubans who go back to cuba on occasion to visit family. And it is true that Cuba has a great healthcare system! For those hospitals they show visitors. If one goes to the hospitals that the majority of Cubans have to go to, you won't be singing its praises.

Just like life in the Soviet Union was great! I mean, foriegners had their own special compounds, and stores, and hospitals. The Soviet Union had huge numbers of doctors too, which showed how well the Soviet people were taken care of. Which is why life expectancy actually dropped in the last 20 years of the Soviet Union. Ooops! Guess they do actually know how lucky they are in the USSR.

What a closed dictatorship shows the rest of the world has very little to do with how things actually are. However, it is enough to fool certain people who wish to believe that things are going great.

Everything is relative. Compare it (in terms of the average person) to Mexico

I have never been to a Cuban or Mexican hospital, however I am willing to trust my Cuban friends that their healthcare system is typically third world. I don't think either Mexico or Cuba are worthy of being pointed to as wonderful examples of good healthcare.

I pointed it out as an example of good health care in the third world. My whole point was that Cuba may be impoverished compared to the U.S. but compared to other Latin American countries, it's rather successful.
