Marine had cousin shoot him to avoid Iraq

19-year-old feared returning to Iraq; told police he was randomly shot

Updated: 9:45 a.m. ET July 15, 2005
CHICAGO - A young Marine who feared returning to Iraq persuaded his cousin to shoot him in the leg, then told police he was hit by random gang gunfire, authorities said.

The shooting early Saturday was meant to keep 19-year-old Moises Hernandez from going back to Iraq, prosecutors said.

He was charged with filing a false police report. His cousin, Juan Hernandez, 19, faces a felony weapons charge.

Moises Hernandez is back with his unit at Camp Pendleton, California, and the Marines are investigating the incident. His unit had returned June 5 from a six-month deployment that included a month in Iraq.

The young man's father, Ray Hernandez, said his son also had been sent to Indonesia after the devastating tsunami in December. The father said his son had seen death up close and was troubled by nightmares when he returned home.

"Whatever he experienced changed him totally," the senior Hernandez said.

I had a soldier who dropped his knife into his foot. However, it was a case of being Joe, not one of willfully trying to avoid the 12 month deployment. He was cutting some Type III Nylon aka 550 Cord (for its 550 lb PSI tensile strength) aka Dummy Cord (because even dummies can't lose equipment tied down), set his knife on the ledge of the bed of his pickup truck, and had it fall and slice a tendon in his foot. He missed the first two months of the deployment and then joined us in Mosul for the rest of the deployment.

I can't tell you how many recruiting posters I see here in Chicago with pictures of bikini clad girls on sandy white beaches sipping Margaritas. It really is quite misleading.

Someone should tell these recruits that when they enlist in the military, there will be a small chance, especially during a time of war, that they may possibly be deployed - otherwise, how are they suppose to know?

Ya know, I've been wanting to post this for a really long time now, almost from your first post:

You're no 'liberal'. You're one of us right-thinking, common-sense, patriotic, values-havin' solid citizens. I'd be proud to claim almost ANY of your posts as my own, and if you were truly a liberal, I'd rather bust my own fingers than type that.

Sorry, lady, you have to get a new handle, and welcome to the sane and rational world of the non-liberals. I guess you were always here with us, but you just didn't know it. Leave the REAL liberals on whatever planet they prefer (we can't locate 'em exactly, but they seem to be out past Pluto, then take a hard left), and join us down-to-Earth types that live in the real world.

Another good post, by the way.

You know, I've actually seen a lot of bloggers/commenters on blogs over the past few days that talk about how they were card carrying Democrats for much of their lives. However, they all had nearly the same thing to say - they didn't leave the party, the party left them. I found it to be a striking coincidence.
