UK Military Equipment Handover to Iraqi Security ForcesUK Ministry of Defence
More International Defence News and Information: http://www.defencenews.info The handover of part of a £27 million package of security equipment to the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) was welcomed today (17 May 2005) by Defence Secretary, John Reid, during his first visit to an operational theatre since his appointment. This is the first tranche of equipment; plans are being developed for further packages. The security equipment, including armoured Land Rovers, communications kit, search equipment, guns and ammunition is being given to the ISF by the UK to help them provide their own security in order to build a peaceful and stable Iraq. Accompanied by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Sir Michael Walker, Mr Reid visited the newly formed 10th Iraqi Army Division at Basra Air Base where he saw some of the new equipment and met UK trainers. He was met by the Chief of Staff of the 10th Division, Colonel Samir Saddam Al-Assal. Commenting on the equipment handover, Mr Reid said: "The UK Government is committed to supporting the Iraqi Government to build a peaceful and stable Iraq. As part of this support the UK is providing security equipment and facilities for use by the Iraqi Security Forces. This will assist the ISF to fulfil their role in providing a stable environment in which Iraqi citizens can live and work safely and securely.
