DC vs Iraq: Which is safer?

Got this from a poster at my board:

"Washington DC Vital Statistics

According to www.icasualties.org , there have been 88 hostile fire deaths caused by firearms since the beginning of hostilities in Iraq. The remainder of coalition deaths have been due to explosives or accidents.

Considering that there have been on average 160,000 troops in theater during the last 22 months, there has been a firearm death rate(in Iraq) of 60 per 100,000. The rate in DC is 80.6 per 100,000. You are more likely to be shot and killed in our Nation's Capital, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than in Iraq.

The conclusion? The U.S. should immediately pull out of WASHINGTON, DC."

Ouch! A shot against gun control and the anti-Iraq crowd.

Hey, does that mean we can send in all of those pinko liberal idiots to D.C. as peacekeepers?

you could say the same about dresden in spring 1945, but a comparative lack of firearms related deaths doesn't make it any less dangerous....

I fail to see your point.

BTW, just for clarification, it is illegal to possess an assembled and operable firearm of any kind in Washington DC.

Maybe with guns.

I live outside of DC.

How many people get killed by IEDs made from mortar rounds in DC... or RPG-7s... or suicide car bombs...

Going to a club in DC is a lot safer then buying a loaf of bread in most cities in Iraq...

You missed the point entirely troung.

I posted this thread as a commentary on the utter foolishness of gun control measures.

Other than the geese, the Mall is a really clean and wonderful. But if you walk a mile away from it, you'll see old, thin houses needing several coats of paint.

Right. There are still people with guns in DC because you can buy them anywhere outside there. Plus, its ghetto as hell, and I'd never walk through the streets at night there. Same goes for many parts of Houston though.

Which would explain why all the surrounding communities where guns are readily available have a mere fraction of the firearms violence that DC does, right?

LOL...

That argument is so utterly lame and so easily defeated that it's not even worthy of serious debate.

I'm not really sure what my argument is, because I haven't made one. But if I had, I'm sure it would be lame, as you seem to think all my ideas are.

I guess I shouldn't argue with you too much, or I might end up on the receiving end of your sniper training.

That sounds an awful lot like an argument to me. A lousy one, but an argument nonetheless.

And i would never shoot an American under anything but the most extreme situations.

Fewer guns means fewer violent crimes.

"Fewer guns means fewer violent crimes. "

The statistics directly contradict that view in a very convincing fashion.
