I am shocked as well. Hangin' is way too good for this dude for all the pain he put humanity through. He should atleast be forced to listed to Celine Dion 24/7 untill the hangman comes.

It's enough that the "trial" was BS but that is taking it a step as an American I feel is too far and morally wrong.

Saddam Hussein 'executed in Iraq'

Saddam Hussein 'executed in Iraq'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6218485.stm

Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been executed by hanging at an unspecified location, reports say.

Iraqi TV said the execution took place just before 0600 local time (0300GMT). It was witnessed by a doctor, lawyer and officials. It was also filmed.

US troops and Iraqi security forces are on high alert for any violent backlash.

Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by an Iraqi court on 5 November after a year-long trial over the 1982 killings of 148 Shias in the town of Dujail.

Two co-defendants, Saddam Hussein's half-brother Barzan al-Tikriti and former Iraqi chief judge Awad Hamed al-Bandar, were also expected to be executed.

The BBC's Adam Brookes in Washington says the Bush administration will see the act as turning a page in Iraq - a demonstration that Iraq has a sovereign and democratic government.

A US statement is expected. However, the Bush administration will be keen to portray the execution as a matter purely for the Iraqi government and its court system, our correspondent says.

Well, I for one am elated. I could actually feel the planet improve as he left it.

GodDAM', fellas, this is not a tragedy, it's a triumph. As for the hand-wringing and unseemly moral posturing over his 'BS' trial, you're WAY off - the job that was before the court got done in better than necessary fashion, even as the evil old bastard masterminded MORE mayhem against his own people, one last time, in a savage attempt to save his own worthless skin.

What the hell is wrong with this collection of moral cripples we've got in here? Y'all need a dam' reality check - this was a WIN, and we've had few enough of those recently. So pull up your socks and act like something other than a parcel of shrinking violets.

JAYZUS, you people are incomprehensible to me, sometimes.

ACG,

I have heard it said that "haste makes waste".

I have a sneaky suspicion that Saddam Hussein alive at this particular time was still an asset.

It was probably unwise for him him to be disposed of while he was still front page material.

We should of washed our hands of the matter and thrown him at the Hague. Let the Eurocratic lawyers quibble circuitously over his disposition for the rest of the decade while his alive but out of circulation status was exploited to useful ends.

Removing Mr. Hussein from the theatre in both time and space would have created opportunities to better manipulate the situation in the Middle East.

Death of natural causes in jail is a pretty handy state of affairs. Sometimes it is better to kill a man with due process rather than conclude business with a hatchet job.

Whether or not we have a hatchet job to clean up after remains to be seen but one would tend to think that rushing to see that all of this is transpiring at the start of the Hajj and right on the doorstep of Eid ul Ahda is not the acme of being politically astute.

Regards,

William

William,

This is Iraq and for the new Iraq to be borned, the old Iraq must die. I don't see anyway around this. Saddam was either a marytr or an oralce. Dead marytrs can't lead. Oracles, even jailed ones, do that quite well.
