    Possible new features for WAB

Some of you might remember that we talked about buying an upgrade for WAB and were even considering a donation drive for this. While there were more than enough people willing to chip the whole project had to be put on ice for the time being. The reason for that is that the guys who run the day-to-day business on WAB are not the same who own it and take care of all hosting issues. The server of WAB is provided for free by Rochen, something we all are very grateful for. The minor downsize of this is that we are completely free when it comes to a few issues like upgrading WAB. In fact we are not even able to do it on our own, but have to ask them to do it (which is not a complain, just an explanation while nothing has happened in that area for a while). Also, unlike a college student like me, they have actual jobs to do and thus can be quite hard to reach.

Point of this long winded explanation? We started talking in the staff of maybe having another run at getting those upgrade and convincing Martin to do all that work for us (since it is technical not possible for us to do it alone). But before start begging him for a very wabby christmas present, we wanted to hear if you guys are even interested in those (possible ) changes. After all it would be pointless to introduce changes everybody hates.

So here is what we have planned:

Most of you know that there is a huge problem with our search engine, which causes that there is a “memory hole” that covers years of posts, which can no longer be accessed with it. To make things worse, this problem seems to be unfixable..but there would be a workaround. We could integrate a Google Custom Search, this would pretty much be a second search feature on the site, that uses google, instead of our own faulty search function, to search WAB for your keywords.

The second one would be an upgrade for the Vbulletin software we are using. It would still be Version 4, but the premium version which offers more features (but also of course costs more). The main reason we are eying with this because of a feature called 'Content Management System'. This would allow us to easily integrate several new features. The most interesting (for me) would be the chance to create a WAB Portal, visitors would see instead of simply the Forum List's (which of course would also still be directly accessible for those who prefer). In stead of trying to explain what it would look like let me simply give you an example:

    vBadvanced

As you can see, we could integrate news, polls, the latest posts, as well as chosen WAB's classic discussion and many other things on a single page.

While all this of course costs money we are not asking for any donations as of yet. Instead we simply want to hear if you even WANT this. But please keep in mind that even if we all agree here, it might still be very possible that we can't get this upgrades for various reasons. I can't think of more than a half dozen valid reasons Martin might say no, so please don't blame him or anyone else if this goes nowhere. After all without their generosity this place would not even exist.

    P.S.
If there any other features you would like to see, now would be a good time to name them. We can't make any promises, but it won't hurt to ask.
    uh I might be wrong

I vote for the search and against the CMS. The demo site vBulletin created looks pretty much like long forgotten BBS's.

More emoticons would be nice, so tankie and Yello could express better.

Anyway to go back to the old format, at least in looks?

I know we had the new look for awhile but to me it still looks like what you might see in a computer monitor in a bad sci-fi movie...

Sure, why not? Not like Facebook hasn't changed it's layout 2 million times by now

    '08 seems about right.

Thee one with the orangish theme. Kinda tacky but was much easier on the eyes.

I don't care for the "new" look either, but if it makes admin duties easier, I am ok with the change. The search engine would be an improvement, I would use it.

Having a google custom search would be very convenient. It's rather annoying to go into google and do a manual site search.

One thing I just realized was that we don't have a Logo/Symbol anymore.

Nothing that says, "World Affairs Board" on the splash page.

    and.....
    World Affairs Board
    Welcome to World Affairs Board:
in small letters on the top left just ain't gonna cut it.

I can come up with a couple if you're interested, Tarek.

I think I can design a few.....even though it's been years since I had to.

Since you killed smiley and had Yellow fever with Black letters on red background, I wonder how this will turn out

I support the retrieval of 'lost' archives and if this needs an 'in house' google then so it should be. I personaly learn alot from reading old debates.
