This is what keeps WAB free to use. That and you need to ditch that 24k modem you've been on since 1995.

It's OK Google or someone else to place ads. I guess highsea is pissed it takes 30s to load simple forum page.

ROFL @ modem comment. Bet he has USRobotics and bought it to last forever :D :D :D

Old USR is not the new USR. Old USR modems were good. Then it went out of business. New USR modems are built by Conexant. I know there are no markings anywhere on the board, chip, or even the driver that says anything about Conexant. I know because we scrubbed them at the request of USR. I worked for Conexant and we built USR modems.

Banner ads? We have banner ads? Oh, right, Adblock. Ah...Adblock...how I love thee...what's that, Flashblock? No, no I haven't forgotten you, I love you too. *hug*
I enjoy being wrong too much to change my mind.

As already mentioned by others, these ads are what keeps WAB going (and free), but it should certainly not take them 30 seconds to load, in fact the loading time should be barely noticeable.
    uh I might be wrong

First of all, I have a 256K DSL line. It's more than sufficient for all my business purposes of emailing drawings and other documents back and forth to my customers.

This board had no problem soliciting donations from the membership when it was time to buy a new server. It has long been the practice for internet message boards to eliminate the banner ads when you logged in.

Sometimes the page loads quickly, other times it just hangs waiting for some other server to get it's own processes done. The stalls aren't at WAB, they are at the google/doubleclick.net end.

Regardless of the load time, I still object to the condition that I have to subject my computer to data mining and delays while some advertiser or their proxy is running scripts against my computer.

    Highsea,

Can you give us a snap shot, ie print screen, to see what ads are popping up?

I use a registry cleaner to scrub out doubleclick - I despise that malware. Fix-It utilities is one version, but there are many others. Lavasoft Ad-Adware is a nice free tool too.

They are dynamic Colonel, they change with every page load. If I do a screen cap, the file is to large to attach without converting to jpeg, compressing, etc. Next page load will be a different ad anyway.

The hangs are on the doubleclick.net scripts, not the ad jpeg itself. My computer has to attempt to scan each one before it runs, etc.

Or I could call doubleclick.net a "trusted site", which would be pretty f*ckin stupid.

My complaint is that we have to do something of that nature as a condition of visiting WAB.

Most of that freeware comes with it's own headaches, plus the additional time wasted for installs, updates, the additional processing overhead, and so on.

I have two computers available for Internet, both contain business critical data, and I don't like exposing them to unnecessary risk. I also don't like to slow them down with extraneous overhead, since their primary use is for my business activities.

Outside WAB, the only Internet activity is ording small tools and supplies from online vendors, and emailing drawings and other business correspondence. I don't sit in my office and surf the web- I would have to setup a dedicated computer for that use to protect my business data.

So from my perspective, the decision to force google ads and adproxies on me are placing my business computers at some unknown level of risk that I do not find tolerable. I like to come in the office while the machines are running and chit-chat with you guys, but it's not something I can't live without.

Running a website is always an expensive business and like it or not Google and doubleclick are the main guys in the game for ad revenue.

I think you should just switch to firefox with adblock. I am in India with a crap fraudband connection.
Whenever i have issues i just switch browsers from opera to firefox+adblock.

Here is the screencap in jpg. It sat there for about 30 seconds before it finally loaded.

What, not only do I have to subject myself to invasive scripts, but I have to upgrade my browser too?

    I like IE6.
