    Israeli warplanes in Iraq

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Israeli Air Force war planes have practiced in Iraqi air space, possibly in preparation for a potential strike on Iran's nuclear sites, the Jerusalem Post reported Friday, citing remarks by Iraqi defense ministry sources to a local news network. The report was also carried by Iranian news outlets, the newspaper said, and claimed that recent, massive, nocturnal activity by Israeli planes was noted at several U.S. bases. The Jerusalem Post said it could not confirm the veracity of the report.

The US has allowed Israeli jets to use US airbases in Iraq and fly over Iraqi airspace for a likely attack against Iran, Iraqi media say.

It is more than a month that some Israeli planes belonging to Israeli air force use the US military bases in Iraq to land and take off, Iraqi Nahrainnet news network said Wednesday, quoting informed sources close to Iraq's Defense Ministry.

The story appears on several sources. Parties involved naturally deny an upcoming strike on Iran.

It could ofcourse be nothing more than exercises. With Iran next door I can imagine that the government in Iraq would be happy to have Israel on their side.

    Thoughts? Opinions?

edit: Maybe this topic belongs in the middle east section.

It would be hard to come up with a sum large enough to get Iraq to allow the IDF to carry out an exercise on their soil.

If the IDF were planning a strike at Iran, the Jersalem Post and LiveLeak would be the last to know about it.

We keep getting information that Israel and/or US will someday, attack Iran.

I am wondering on what ground and explanation would those attacks on Iran?
Will they be backed by some public announcement, UNSC resolution, or we will wake up to see a total chaos on the ME?

I don't think it's in Iraq's best interest to ally itself, in any way with Israel in regards to its security. Especially when it comes to Iran. It would just add even more to the impression the region already has that the United States is running the government there. These guys refuse to accept that Israel even exists, I find it hard to believe that they allowed Israeli jets into their airspace without some sort of coercion. Besides, I don't believe that Israeli jets flying over a neighbouring country is a greater deterrent than the concentrated presence of the United States military.

I read the news story and it said the Israelis were at the base I'm currently at in western Iraq. I can assure you they are not here, nor were ever here. If they were, I'd have pictures!
