Thanks for this very valuable offering. I was unaware of this but am currently engaged in a transformation discussion with some south asian friends elsewhere. It is acrimonious and defined by narrow self-interests. Still, what's interesting is how many of the issues highlighted by Capt. Wayne Porter USN and Col. Mark Mykleby USMC are prevalent there.
In short, although far more poor and weak than ourselves, they share many of the same themes highlighted here.
I've long contended that America's strength stems from Mickey Mouse, Elvis and Madison Avenue. On one hand, it's a crass analogy to the pervasive and insidious influence achieved worldwide by our craven and superficial culture...such as it is.
At a deeper level, it illustrates the role our entrepreneurialism, commercial and scientific advantages play in attaining prosperity and marketshare while advancing America's broader global interests. Our prosperity doesn't stem from our defense but, instead, the reverse. Our security and deterrence stem from our prosperity.
This is an important offering. I've often found Sec'y Gates a fascinating and enigmatic person and wonder what role he may have played in this document. His departure is imminent but he's been a profound advocate of change within DoD. This document has his stamp upon it in my view. I'm also intrigued by the relationship Capt. Porter and Col. Mykleby have to the CJCS, Adm. Mullen. No doubt, Adm. Mullen's time is short as well.
Are these men leaving us their legacy message here?
Again, thanks.
