That's a very broad topic. I'd look at some of the following:
1. Clinton sending aircraft carrier battle groups through the Straits of Taiwan and how that shaped Chinese thinking.
2. Buy Andrew Krepinevich's "Seven Deadly Scenarios" and look at this China scenario. You can look at the source he footnotes as well as get an idea of a potential scenario for the future.
3. Look at the PACOM posture statements and trace how they differ.
4. Look at the statements and actions of the Rumsfeld Pentagon (e.g., the decision on where to station the Stryker Brigades as an example of his focus upon taking over the helm there).
5. Read the China forum everyday - this may actually be better off in that forum so it can generate discussion from those much more informed than I on what to look at.
6. It's not enough to look at the bilateral relationship of China and the US. How do US actions in ROK and JPN impact China policy and how does China policy impact decisions in the bilateral relationships with ROK and JPN?
