Shooting set to end top female boxer's career

Shooting set to end top female boxer's career

    (AFP) – 2 hours ago

BERLIN — Top female boxer Rola El-Halabi, who is recovering in hospital after being gunned down by her step-father before a world title fight, may never return to the ring, her promoter said on Sunday.

El-Halabi, 26, was shot her in the hands, feet and knees in her dressing room as she prepared to fight for the WIBF world lightweight title in Karlshorst, Berlin, on Friday night.

Two security guards were also shot during the attack, but are recovering in hospital having also undergone surgery.

"Her operation went smoothly, but the shots were intended to end her career and it seems almost certain that that will happen," her promoter Malte Mueller-Michaelis told SID, an AFP subsidiary.

El-Halabi's 44-year-old attacker was overpowered by police at the boxing hall and arrested shortly after the shooting, while nearly 600 spectators were quickly evacuated.

"I was with my coach and manager in the changing room when Dad rushed into the room, threatening us with a gun and shouted 'All out!," El-Halabi told Sunday's edition of German daily Bild.

"Then he shot me in the hand from three feet away, I cried and cried, begging him to put the gun away.

"He threatened to shoot himself, but he was too cowardly.

"He took his time aiming and and shot me in the knee, then in my right foot."

The background of the attack stems from El-Halabi's decision in January to stop working with her step-father as her manager.

El-Halabi, who is undefeated from 11 fights with six knock-outs and has held two world titles in her career, had been due to face Bosnian Irma Adler as part of her comeback after a break from boxing.

This was no man, and no father - the vile thing. To do this to his daughter, he should have sawed off his own head. The jaws of hell gape and dribble for his rotted, withered soul.

Technically she isn't his daughter, he just married her mother about twenty-four years ago (when she was two). She apparently fired him as manager after he left her mother a couple months ago.

Trial against the stepfather started tuesday. He's charges with dangerous battery (due to using a weapon), possible sentence minimum six months, maximum ten years.

They had to rebuild her hand using some hip bone parts, apparently currently not fully usable still. Part of the trial will be a detail medical examination of possible or non-possible rehabilitation, which would probably affect the sentence. The damage probably isn't serious enough to get him for serious battery though (loss of functionality of a limb) where, if intentionally caused, the minimum sentence rises to three years.

Why is the victim visible on the pic, while the perp eyes are covered?

He shoots his 'daughter' a number of times and ends her career but the Courts may not think that bad enough to charge him with "serious battery" Did he shoot the weapon? yes, 5 years..did he fire more than once? yes, another 5 yrs. Did he end her career? yes..another 5 yrs. Forget this nonsense of six months minimum, it should be ten years minimum.

What would he do if he was serious. Eric, he shoots two security guards and his daughter and he might get 10yrs max. The Justice System seems to have caught some sort of Stupid Disease of late. They must have caught it from Brussels just like the UK.

He is charged with committing battery using a weapon. German laws supersede each other - with regard to battery you get charged with either:

    - negligent battery (fine to three years)
    - battery (fine to five years)
    - battery using a weapon in minor cases (three months to five years)
    - battery using a weapon (six months to ten years)
    - battery against dependents (six months to ten years)
    - battery against dependents causing serious injury (one to ten years)
    - serious battery causing permanent disability in minor cases, unintentional (six months to five years)
    - serious battery causing permanent disability in minor cases, intentional (one to ten years)
    - serious battery causing permanent disability, unintentional (one to ten years)
    - serious battery causing permanent disability, intentional (three to fifteen years)
    - battery resulting in death in minor cases (one to ten years)
    - battery resulting in death (three to fifteen years)

Each of those options has a certain set of requirements. His act qualifies for "battery using a weapon", and only that - unless it can be proven that the injury is a permanent disability or disfigurement. Even then the two fingers she can't move right now would only qualify for at most "serious battery causing permanent disability in minor cases, intentional". Non-minor case would be if they had to amputate.

He today received a sentence of six years, not commuted, for one count of attempted serious battery (i.e. intending to cause permanent disability) in combination with battery using a weapon and illegal carrying of a weapon (that one's for shooting the stepdaughter), one count of battery using a weapon in combination with illegal carrying of a weapon (for shooting a security guy) and one count of battery (he beat up the girl's boyfriend last year). The DA was calling for a sentence of 6 years and 10 months, the daughter as wing accuser for a sentence of 8 years. Defense was trying for a sentence of "less than 6 years". The sentence was lowered due to him confessing to the crime and appearing remorseful.
