And the fear was certainly real

From Transcript 806: Six Days of War

Quote:
Michael Oren: The Syrians who played such a prominent role in precipitating this war cleverly stay out of it. The rumor in the Arab world--the conventional wisdom in the Arab world is that the Syrians were willing to fight to the last Egyptian. And it's true. They stayed out of this war but they were shelling thousands of shells onto Israeli settlements. The Israeli government voted not to attack Syria. This is an interesting episode.

Peter Robinson: The Cabinet votes not to attack?

Michael Oren: They're afraid of Soviet intervention. The Soviets were so closely allied with the Syrians, they were afraid if Israel struck at Syria then the Soviets would intervene and destroy Israel. Many of the Israeli leaders in 1967 had grown up in Russia. They remembered the Cossacks and they were afraid of their--there's the nerd part. Okay.

Lull,

The terrorism aspect is no big deal.

There is always the possibility of India doing a cross border sweep at the camps.

Further, there are so many hassles in Pakistan - the Baluchis, the Pathans, the Sindhis and the good olf Shias up in Northern Territories. Maybe all the goody two shoes of our Indian politicians may end.

Thereafter, all it has to be said is that we are only given them moral support!

No nuclear conflageration. All nice and peaceful

Anyone who does not attempt to avert an unnessary war with the Soviet Union is proud to the point of stupidity. Any country smaller than New Jersey would have to be phychotic to try to fight the USSR when their sovreignty is not threatend.

Diplomatically paksitan has lost a big support. We can see the effect in the form of pakistan coming on the table for talks.

Well "jab chooha bahut shor machata hai pareshaan karta hai tab sher ko zaroorat nahin hotee uthne ki bas nind mein panja maar key hata sakte hain.

And about terrorism Well its already considerably reduced and as more money is invested , dams are build( which will clearly give the pak lifeline in the indian hands ) things will be back to normal. The infiltration levels are quite low now after the fencing of the LOC. And with latest gadgets being procured things things sound good. After all we controlled the situation in punjab . So why not kashmir.

And it was a very wise decision but the point remains that the Israelis lacked the capability and, more importantly, the confidence to take on the Soviet juggernaut. It is extremely incorrect to compare the Israelis to those armies that not only have the capability but also the confidence in facing the Soviets.

Well ajay i do agree the acticity of terrorists have come down quite a bit,but doesnt this happen during all winters. The coming summer will be a clear test of the effectiveness of LOC fencing and using gadgets like thermal imaging etc etc.
