Indian Coast Guard to set up five major stations

NEW DELHI: The Indian Coastguard is planning to set up five major stations by next year to boost its strength and to improve the country’s coastline security. It is also planning to induct 21 more warships.

Coastguard Director General Vice Admiral RF Contractor told the Coastguard commanders conference on Monday that his force also plans to set up three marine coastal security units off the Arabian coast with the help of the Union Home Ministry on a fast track basis to check the smuggling of weapons and explosive material by terrorist groups. He said the three new marine police stations were likely to be set up at Vereval, Dahanu and Murud Janjira in Gujarat. Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Secretary Shekar Dutt also attended the Commanders conference. The moot discussed steps to prevent terrorists from using the country’s long western coastline to smuggle weapons and explosives. The director general said that three major Coast Guard stations had been established at Jakhau, Pondicherry and Beypore and that another station would also be commissioned at Kakinada next month. The Coastguard has 70 warships and 45 aircraft at its disposal. Its reach would be strengthened with the induction of 21 warships, including pollution control vessels and fast intercepts. iftikhar gilani

The Coast Guard is coming of age.

It has given a yeoman's service so far and is getting better all the time.

Now, it is doing direct recruitment instead of having naval officers seconded to it.
