I think the aruvaal is for clearing vegetation in the forest.

hadn't the LTTE back stabbed india by assaisnating rajiv gandhi ,india at this critical juncture would have entered directly into the conflict ,..
but today India is just watching like sitting duck with SL army massacring our blood relations ........

Most armies in the tropics carry at least 2 machete per section. Usually by the Sec Com and the Sec Com 2IC.....

The reason India is not intervening today is that the Sinhalese can't be trusted.
Consider this, we went there to clear their mess in the 80's but at one stage the Sinhalese army was supplying weapons to the LTTE to get rid of us because the Sinhalese army had managed to destroy the JVP militarily, therefor now they could concentrate on exterminating the Tamils....

very well put MEDIC!! gosh u DO know quite a lot about srilanka!. yes by the time the JVP was taken care of by the sl gov, they went back in earnest doing their main job, that os getting rid of the tamils.

Not to add fuel to the fire, the JVP has teamed up with the sl gov and is one of the major racist parties in sl.

and veera, u have to realise that even thou it was a mistake for the ltte to have assasinated rajiv, many at that time were really bitter agasint rajiv to have fallen so perfectly into the trap set by the srilankan president into attacking the ltte and the tamils.did u know that tamils actually welcomed the IPKP with garlands and festivals of celibration? and later we all know what happaned. i wish rajiv could have seen thru the machinations of the srilankan premier.

Ps: and also rem the srilankan soldier who, on a parade, tried to kill rajiv by smashing him on the head with his rifle but? guess what!! now he is amember of the untra racists "jathika sinhala urumaya" and a famous man in that party! cos he "fought" the "indian hegemon" <quoting from the parties statement!. it pains me to say this..but rajiv was truly suckerd by the Sl premier, who took advantage of india's good intentions

till around the 13th century there are wars between the tamils and the sinhalese(very rarely). then the forest creeps in..with malarial swamps and except for trade, very few interaction between these communities happens

till the british start clearning this jungles and establishing highways,

tamils and sinhalese(but mostly tamils) protest agasint british rule(inspired by mahatma gandhi). This freedom struggle is led by a tamil, a Sir. Ponnambalam
, a brtish educated tamil who wants freedom for srilanka.

He goes and talks to the queen(his relative was the teacher to the Queen herself on english, when the queen was a youngster!!!! a srilankan tamil!!!) on behalf of srilankans and has a lot of his demands agreed on, except that they are told to wait a bit till they are given independance.

this news is celibrated in srilanka, and whn he returns from srilankan, he is put on a horse carriage and drawn all over colombo not by horses!! but by the major 8 sinhala members of the freedom allience!! he was that popular that they substituted themselves for horses! SWRD Bandaranayake was one of them.

a year passes and the sinhala people complain that they cant have a tamil as the leader of this party!! saying that this is a "sinhala buddhist" country. a shocked ponnambalam leaves the party and forms a party for tamils.

the brith give independance, but ponambalam and the tamil party say that they dont need a seperate country and they can live with the sinhla people in peace(they were naive!!)

now when SWRD Bandaranayake is the primeminister, he declares thet "sinhala will be the national language, and buddhism will be the national religion" hence taking away the equal status tamil had,

tamil government servants(there were more tamil government servants/businessmen/professinal than the sinhalese in sl and this was a cause of jelousy) are to lose their jobs if they dont speak sinhala!! cos their knowledge of english is not recognised!! cos english is not the national language either!! only sinhala is!!..soo many tamils are dissapointed! and dissolutioned

peaceful ahimsa protests are broken up by shooting and beating.

a riot starts in 1958, killing hundreds if not thousands of tamils and mass robbery and vandalism on tamil property and businesses happen.

more riots agasint tamils in 1971, 1978 happen,thousands are killed and many more left destitute.

many tamil government servants lose their jobs as well.
their places filled by sinhalese who didnt even know how to write a word in english.

even after all these mishaps tamils still made up about 75% of the medical and engineering students in the srilankan universities. cos of their perseverance and hard work.a government plan is made to negate this and it is called "standardisation". in wich tamils have to take about 280-290 out of 300 possible points on the final nationwide exam to get selected to the engineering/medical faculties while the sinhalese have to get only 220-230(sometimes even low as 200) to get to the same faculties in the universities!!!!!. and the exam paper is the same too!!

thousands of tamil youth are enraged by this blatant and deleberate attmpt to deny the rights of tamils, and deny education!

in 1982 the largest library in south asia is torched!!!! by government troops. it was on jaffna(north). hundreds of thousands of rare tamil books and ancient manucrips are burnt to cinder. the government makes sure no one is able to put down the fire by making a cordon of soldiers around the burning library and beating back anyone who went there to try to stop the burning

ltte ambushes a army convoy killing 13 soldiers

in 1983 the worst ever riots agasint tamils start. this pogrom claims the lives of up to 500o tamils, who are cut down on the street and burnt with tires on their necks. or are hanged over fire so they roast slowly to death.....hundreds of tousands flee south to the north.they lose all their property and wealth..all their businesses.

then the war starts in earnest and continues till today

ps: i forgot to mention that tamil temples are destroyed occasionally and bigegr temples are into barracks by the srilankan army. they intentionaly slaughter cows inside the temple, and shoot up the entire place

the major reaon for this was that the sinhalese hated tamils cos tamils were so well off! they were the well educated community and the most prosperous. this led to the sinhala politicians to claim that the sinhala people are not getting any jobs cos tamils have the jobs!(to cover their omn inability to provide new jobs they blame tamils!)
oh and religion plays a major part! buddhist monks openly say that this is a sinhala buddhist country and tamils should be kicked out to the sea!(the irony being that the tamils were the naives while the sinhalese were the newcomers!!!)they hold rallies, the monks break up peace rallies!

thanks for effort in explaining the root cause of the conflcit ...i had a thought that buddhism is very much peaceful relgion ,but sinhalese breaked my belief ...

sad to see so mcuh of lifes been lost in a senseless conflict ...may the war end and peace returns to this paradise island
