Afghan bomb hits Canadian convoy

Afghan bomb hits Canadian convoy
A Canadian military convoy has been attacked in southern Afghanistan, Afghan officials have said.

The bomber died but it is not clear whether there are any other casualties.

The attack happened in the Daman district, some 15km (10 miles) south of Kandahar. The area has been sealed off by soldiers.

A spokesman for the former Taleban regime, Qari Mohammad Yousuf, has said the attack was carried out by members of the group, reports say.

"A car full of explosives blew up near a Canadian armoured vehicle," General Rahamatullah Raufi, the Afghan army commander in the south, told Reuters.

The vehicle is said to have been partially damaged.

Canadian presence

On Thursday, a Canadian soldier was killed and at least six others injured in an accident outside Kandahar.

Canada has some 2,300 troops stationed in Afghanistan, most of them in the south.

In January, a senior Canadian diplomat was killed in Kandahar by a suspected suicide bomber.

Last year, attacks mainly in the south and east left more than 1,400 people dead. It was the country's bloodiest year since US-led forces ousted the Taleban in late 2001.

What a bunch of cowards. WTF, do these Islamic terrorists know ANYTHING apart from suicide attacks and bombing mosques?

Have any Canadian soldiers died in Afganistan besides the ones that have been killed by accidents and friendly fire?

It's sad when more soldiers die from friendly fire then from the enemy.

They all went out the same way. It doesn't matter if it was a vehicle roll-over, or a bullet. They went out fighting an enemy of all humanity. God bless them all...

So-called "friendly-fire" is hardly a new problem.
The best thing that can be said now is that methods, technology, medical care and battlefield tactics have simply reversed the historical trend of hostile fire deaths far outnumbering friendly fire casulties.

The plain and simply fact is that soldiers are dealing with lethal munitions, large and dangerous peices of equipment etc. Accidents are bound to happen. They happen at bases, firing ranges, warships all over the world. Notice how you are hearing only about the ones in Iraq and Afghanistan? That's because when they occur there, it's "newsworthy". Somehow I doubt you are even aware of the other accidental deaths suffered by your military around the world and at home.
