I believe the Remington 700 Light Tactical Rifle in .308 Winchester is the best choice for the police sniper. Custom rifles, semi-autos, and rifles with detachable magazines seldom have any advantage for the police sniper. The Remington LTR's 20" barrel makes it handy, and the .308 has plenty of accuracy for police employment, especially with the Federal Gold Medal Match 168 BTHP.

The .308 has plenty of power for most police employment; however, it has serious limitations in the anti-material role that incident commanders need to understand.

I've shot the 168 BTHP through the most commonly encountered types of glass barriers and for the most part the performance is acceptable; however, targets placed behind the glass show that you will usually encounter some jacket separation and flying glass slivers. Not good for close bystanders but sometimes you have to give up something somewhere; you wouldn't have the jacket separation with a bonded round, but then again, a bonded round doesn't fly as true as the match round.

I voted for the PSG1, but had it been offered, I would have picked one of the Blasers, mainly because I have more experience with them under more conditions. I guess the Blasers are considered more police rifles than military.

Hi all,
Well Just to Chime in here a Snipers rifle has 3 roles so far as I under stand it, One hit the target at enough range that the enemy can't effectively reply. Two do it accurately so as to almost guaranty in the right hands 1 shot 1 kill, and three be powerful enough that cover's only effect is to make the bad guy's feel better ... for a while at least. So lets not forget the worlds current leader in the long range combat kill at over 2600 feet McMillian Tec 50 in the Hand of a PPCLI Marksman in Afghanistan 6 shots 5 kills (the extra round what at that range one of them moved and the round hit and was partly deflected by and RPG launcher, the wound would have been fatal but the follow up shot made sure the two remaining didn't get a warning). Any thoughts? I'm open to any discussion on the matter? I'm new to the board. But I have like what I've seen.

PSG1 and the MSG90 (a DMR rather than sniper rifle) have proven their value very well in combat. I'm surprised the M-110, Cheytac Intervention, and the M40 (Winchester 70) aren't listed up here as sniper rifles available but Remington 700 variants take up numerous slots lol
if anyone saw the Cheytac intervention on future weapons, the host of the show put 3 rounds on a man sized target at a phenomenal 2350 yard range in a gusty Idaho badlands.

Greetings NK, The cheytac came to our attention well after the thread was started. Granted it is the current, long distance, world record holder, it has not been absolutely proven in combat. Please try to check out the entire thread, it is most interesting, and see what has been said about the various weapons....sometimes surprising. I see you mention the PSG1. I asked the ? earlier, who has actually shot it, or used it in a real world scenario. What's your take/experience with it?

Thank you for the greeting. The cheytac is just an impressive gun from what I've seen but I am curious to see it's performance in combat. From what I've read, the terminal ballistics on paper exceed that of a .50 cal out to around a mile, but the accuracy is something I've seen along with anyone else who is a fan of future weapons lol. As for the PSG1, I just have an match barreled HK91 with a magpul stock and PSG1 forearm/bipod setup so I can't give you details on the PSG1s improved trigger or the performance of it's 26" long barrel, but I can tell you that the weighted stock a crystal clear scope and a decent trigger pull it's easy to knock down a line of cans or jars at 200 yards consistantly and relatively quickly. From what I gather the PSG1 is considerably heavier, and MOA accurate at longer ranges using sniper grade ball ammo. Getting a real live PSG1 in the US will set you back a good 30-40 grand. the MSG90 was used to incredible success by Navy SEAL snipers in grenade whom held off large numbers of armed gunmen with these rifles in sniper hides. the semi-auto and 7.62 bullet just did work. MSG90 is a lighter gun for DMR role with a 20" barrel and no forward assist.

I remain sceptical of any records where Cheytac is involved. They have consistently resisted any honest, open competitions, always putting sharp restrictions on any tests other than those conducted by them for tame writers. The .408 was a promising cartridge in 2002, but today you have to wonder why it wasn't properly rolled out into the hands of people with a need.

It could be that the performance just isn't there. It could be, instead, that the company is so messed up that they couldn't sell hot soup to people trapped in a blizzard. In either case, time seems to be passing them by. I am hoping, now, that the .416 Barrett will develop into something useful.

I can't speak for the Knight, but awhile back I owned a DPMS LR-308 which was the competitor to the knight. Mine had a 24" fluted stainless BBL and I put the one piece rings on mine as well. With a 6-24x40mm mil-dot bushnell it posted sub-moa right out of the box. IMO, DPMS has upped the ante with its current offerings that if they had submitted during the contest, I think would have the contract now. Let us know what you think when you get your hands on one. I'd realy like to hear about it. Welcome to the WAB btw.

Anybody know why FALs are almost never modified for DMR roles unlike their contemporary G3s or M14s?

After a bit of hestitation:

Posters from SF ran web forum professionalsoldiers.com are negative in their attitude towards the M110. Gathering what 7th SF Sniper told me earlier in this thread, my impression is that there is a manufacturing problem specific to Knights.

I don't remember anything on the Knights, I'm not that familiar with them yet. My mention was some earlier problems with some loose fitting mags on the DPMS LR-308. Other than that, the thing was a smokin tack driver, all 400lbs of it
