I was in Misery once. Didn't stay more than 24 hours because my friend (helping him move back) wanted to be out of there in a hurry. Very dry with very large and green trees is all I remember.

I don't want to cause range envy, but I have access to two very private ranges. One is 150yd and the four of us who shoot on it are working to make a 230 yarder. The other is a few miles away in Kansas and is about 450 yards. A friend of mine and I are "in negotiations" to get at least a 1000 yarder. My friend wants to buy .50 but refuses to until we have a real place to shoot it. We are also trying to turn the 150 into something we could have 3gun comps and obstacle shooting. .

Trees, yes. Currently dry, NO! We have recieved about 4 times more rainfall than normal so far this month. I officially hate rain!

I also showed up late for this one as well. IMO you put anyone with the right training and skill set...with a very good leg man...and every single weapon up there becomes quite lethal...but when your on a certain level as i believe at least 3 in this thread are...it becomes the shooters preference which matters and not the weapon.

Imagine if WAB had a members ball, or get together, just imagine the conversation and the after party. something maybe to think about!

I believe sniper rifles should be split into three categories.

A) Classic sniper rifle

B) Long-range sniper rifle / scoped AT rifle

C) Concealed sniper rifle

D) Squad marksman rifle

A) I believe that the accuracy of most in-production sniper rifles is good enough (didn't test them all, of course). Semi-auto is unnecessary most of the time. The G22 (L96 derivative) is good. The differences are overall rather small, a hundred meter more effective range or less can be less important than the easy transport while prone. Most shots would be at less than 500m anyway, and a sniper can hit a helmet reliably at that range with a chosen G3 or FAL (I shot with a G3ZF at 450m and chest shots were no problem).

B) has been revived in the 80's and I believe that the WSG2000 prototype would have been the best rifle in this category if it was fully developed. Excluding the WSG200, I would say this goes to Barrett Model 99 for accuracy despite its weight.
The scope is all-important here, but I don't know much about scopes.

C) is a specialty of the Russians with their 9x39mm calibre. It is important to minimize the signature at night and at short range (urban, forest). A VSS is not perfect, but a good representative for this section. I doubt that the subsonic versions of category A rifles are a good choice - external and terminal ballistics, weight and size are disadvantageous.

D) VSD Dragunov and battle rifles with scopes are most prolific, but other designs are very superior. A MSG90 with a modified ELCAN SpecterDR would be great.

Two distinct and different roles, and operating conditions. Police snipers could never, okay hardly ever justify using a Barrett .50, mostly stuck around .308 caliber, civil liability and all. Military is pretty much unlimited class, except for the ammo, by Geneva convention. Police sniper operates in mostly neutral conditions, not usually having to worry about hostilities directed against them, Military need eyes in the back of their head, and operate in mostly hostile conditions. Military don't usually have to shoot a perp off a hostage, hell if the sniper hits the hostage. Police don't usually have to wait days for the shot and crawl long distances to get there, and usually don't have to beat feet to an extraction point. Even so there is some overlap of weapons.

I have wondered about that also. I know many police depts who have 50s but no one has ever been able to give me a good reason why.

This is certainly the reason for some of the .50s in police armories, but there is a practical reason, as well.

Organized groups of bad guys are increasingly building fortified hideouts, and there are a lot of armored vehicles in private hands, not to mention any armored vehicles that could be stolen and used in crimes. There is also a proliferation of anti-government groups, and they tend to be both heavily armed, and armored (although they often do seem to be more interested in getting the gear than actually learning how to use it).

Since it is generally illegal for the military to operate within the US without a declaration of martial law, dealing with armored civil threats falls to the police.

And fyi, its not Geneva that speaks to ammo use by the military, its The Hague conventions.

I lay the blame for my mistake at the feet of Jose Cuervo for switching the United Nations Conference on Prohibitions or Restrictions of Use of Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) Which May be Deemed to be Excessively Injurious or to have Indiscriminate Effects" convened in Geneva in the fall of 1979 and 1980, with the Hague Declaration III banning the use of dum-dum bullets. I also blame Jose for the way my back feels this morning and for me not wanting to go to work. The price we pay for shooters!

Anybody know the going price of an SVD? And are they worth the price? local shop has one for about 800$. With scope.

If its an actual Russian SVD(not a romanian or some other knock off) and the scope is the russian(or the IOR for that matter). And if it is in decent shape, then yes, thats not a bad price. I've seen fairly beat ones, 60 to 70%cond, go for about that.

Oh, and are they worth it? IMO, no. I'm no fan of AK's and I've used alot of them(probably why I'm not a fan) If I were to buy one A belgian would be my pick. SVD might be second. The 54R hits pretty hard, not real accurate though.
