I like my Bushmaster AR (M4E2S), but I like their new piston-upper rifles even better. If I ever get around to it, I think I will put a shorty piston upper on mine, say 9"-10.5."
I didn't realize that the PSG1 is that heavy. That's half my Barrett! I haven't shot the PSG1 much at all, just maybe a couple hundred fam rounds. We have one at work, but it lives in the vault. Its an older example, with a wooden case and green furniture. We have the original NV setup for it, too, which also lives in the vault. |

Accuracy never seemed to waiver but I never really hammered on it either. My main complaint was weight, 11lbs., and of course the feeding problem. Since they fixed that, I'm sure they are good to go now. One of these little jewels will probably be my next 7.62. Online Store — DPMS: AR-15 Rifles, Parts and Accessories. You don't need an FFL for a shorty, at least under federal law. You just need a CLEO signoff for a SBR, assuming that your state allows it. And yeah, its the CAR15 I had in mind. I loved that gun. If I ever get rich, I might try to build one with a 4-position selector. That reminds me, do you remember the movie "The Green Berets," where John Wayne first had an M16, then a CAR15? The CAR15 was retained by the Army, and I suppose they still have it, but the M16 went into a private collection and is stored near me. I haven't shot it, but have (carefully) handled it. |

Best sniper rifle? A nice bolt action in the 30 cal range, from a reputed manufacturer, with floating bull barrel, coupled with fire formed, hand-loaded match ammo.
And of course a competant shooter. Nothing can help me hit anything other than the broad side of a barn. ![]() |

At least two things need to considered in regards to the question before it can be answered.
First of all, how do we define sniping? Legally, leaving out criminally, there is a difference between a military sniper and a police sniper. The latter is looking at one shot which stops the target dead. The former may also be looking at that ...... or not. If he or she fires the pinpoint round which takes, say, commander down in the rear APC, dead or seriously wounded, they are still out of action. If they are seriously wounded, then they are a burden to their forces, a lingering "disease" on their morale. Secondly, how do we define the sniper? Is this the person that we picture going out alone with their spotter, with a personalty so well identified but so different from the military force, the best of the best shots or is this someone not quite like that who we might have mixed in the regular forces or perhaps as I like to describe them in a sort of romantic fashion, a ranger on horseback on long range patrol (for that, to me, some kind of automatic .308)? Then, what are we taking out? Are we taking out people, optics, unarmored trucks, aircraft engines, F-16's? Do we have to carry the rifle all the way in and all the way out alone or do we have help? It's not the kind of question that is asked with "What's the best sniper rifle?". __________________________________________________ _ ("These guys can hit a bucket at 1000 yards."--Skinner to Mulder about FBI snipers, (w,stte), "The X-Files") |

Good question SL. Some who have posted here have made the distinction and covered those bases. There are huge differences of course, btwn military snipers and police snipers. One major difference is the need for concealment for military. I believe we are trained much more in that aspect than police. I have a unique perspective here since I have done both. Police focus more on accuracy. I personally think that the term sniper for police is a bit out of place. I would refer to them more as sharpshooters.
It would be a lot of reading but there are some good posts here and some interesting opinions. So what would be your pick for the various jobs? |
