Having a small arsenal I can assure you that I make a point of shooting them all on a regular basis to keep them strack, having said that the Olyarm's AR15 with the Eotech is my preferred range/plinking rifle. The only weapons that I have that don't see enough range time are my shot(f)guns, as the local clay range is not local enough for regular visits and the ammo restriction of 2 - 2,4mm subsonic ammo spoils the day out anyway. Combination rifle's are a part of the German/€uropean hunting history, and they always will be, without a doubt. I don't own one because they co$t an arm and a leg, and I'm not all that keen on them anyway. The way to go today would seem to be a large caliber rimmed rifle round (7x65 R for large game Red Deer, Wild Boar etc), and a smaller caliber rimmed rifle round (5,6x52 R for Roe & Fox), and a 12/70 shotgun barrel, rounded off with a large 3-12X56 illuminated scope. The choice of rimmed ammo makes the extractor mechanism much more reliable. The price's start at about €5,000 and go up to the top end at about €86,000 and the scope and mounts will cost you about another €2,000 to €3,000. Tony |

I'm not realy clear on all this argument of what is best! I think we can agree that differrent conditions will place differrent requirements on equipment. I've seen specialty rifles (alquaida) that were pure un adulterated crap ... but, for the aplication ... they seem to have proved effective.
Realy ... you could never compare an AK variant with welded on scope mounts to a serious prescision rifle ...but! if one can place ones hide within 180 meters of ones foe ... I agree they'd been better off with a .22lr but as stated so many times before ... we use what we are issued. So!? they do too. |

Old thread, good subject. I'm new here but have a few opinions to offer. so here you go. Ask any sniper who has had to engage a target. The rifle in your hand is the best one. The main thing here to remember-use the right tool for the job. I operated in jungle and light urban. I am partial to the m21 for 2 reasons. 1. I was involved in its "resurrection" in the late 80s at Bragg when we experimented with some improvements and made it a what I consider the first viable semi-auto sniper weapon. (at that time it was actually the xm-21)Nice thing was you didn't have to tote a car-15 for a stalk gun. Flip the switch on the 21 and instant CQB. 2. It worked and we became proficient with what Unc Sam gave us. Guys in the sandbox like the m82 for the range. Brits like the AI-338. I trained for a mission once with a real nice confiscated Dragunov. Good gun if thats what they gave you, worked for me! I guess what I'm trying to say is love the one one your with! A true soldier/survivor will adapt and overcome. If all you have is rocks---be the best at throwing them!
I will have to say to be more in keeping with the orig ? The best out of the box 308 I ever had was a DPMS 24" stainless-fluted bullbarrel. sub MOA right out of the box! very impressive. I traded it for a loaded M1A that I tricked out and now its my new baby! Like I said...love the one your with! |

I just read a little further back in this thread and notice it went from "what is the best sniper rifle?" to "what can I kill a squirrell with?" Stay on mission! This is a decent question. I would like to hear from ANON on this one. Forgive me if he's already in here I just haven't seen it.

I just checked the chey tac website. For 15grand you too can own the worlds most accurate long range rifle. Evidently it is the world record long range accuracy holder. Something like a five inch group around 12 or 1300 yards. If you use thier ammo. Bet thats bargain priced too! I invested $1200 in my M1 and I can get ammo at Wal-Mart(I would have to be in a pinch to do that though). I don't remember seeing .408 chey tac on the shelf. Hmmm.

almost any modern bolt action hunting rifle would make a good sniper rifle, especially mountan rifles, they are light, i,m sure any solger would love to carry less weight, hunting industry offers great veriety of different calibers and loads, especially new short magnums, and short ultra magnums, are awesome rounds, they can really reach out and touch someone far away, and hard.
