I noticed the Dragunov got an awful lot of votes, despite people pointing out that it's not even a real sniper rifle, but a marksman rifle. Does anyone know what rifle in the Soviet/Russian Army can be considered a real sniper rifle?

The Soviet/Russian army hasn't had a real sniper rifle since Mosin-Nagant was phased out.

It says there that it has been adopted by the Spetsnaz, but is it being used by the actual Russian Army?

Is it general issue? No.

A regular sniper in the army is still going to get an SVD. One in a more specialized unit is going to get a VSS.

And that's the way it's going to be for long time.

Where is an official source on this? Sniper central provided no link to a Ministry of Defense statement.

I find it slightly humorous that half the list is modified versions of the Remington 700.

I voted for "other"

My pick: The Barret M28A1 (?).

You can't beat a .50 cal. round that can go 2000 yards. Not to mention that there is an option for HE rounds.

It's a nice action, period.I bought a 700 BDL in 270Win off the shelf that would shoot 5 shot groups under .75" with factory ammo.No tuning necessary on my part.Remington has had its problems though, saw quite a few barrels drilled slightly off center for a short period of time, they corrected that quickly.

You can't beat it, but it'll sure beat you when you try to carry it for excessively long distances. That's why it's a specialized weapon.

The best rifle is the one that you are well trained on and is suited to the mission that requires a long distance rifle. :D It is mission dependent.

So I shouldn't be worried if someone has a small arsenal at their house?
