I didn't see my favorite assault rifle, the FN SCAR, so I voted for the M-4. I know it's an old poll, but could we maybe add the FN SCAR (both the -L and the -H)? And maybe the HK416?

I really don't see why SOCOM decided to go with the SCAR instead of the HK416.

Objectively, without some American pro M16 mythology - because it is a better weapon, that's why.
    Whatever happens, we have got
the Maxim Gun, and they have not

LMT and a few others have a new(well not really, its what stoner wanted in the first place)gas operating system for the AR utilizing a piston like the browning design. The SIG556, which by the way utilizes that system, is a very good gun but I would prefer to have the orig AR lower since so many accessories are now available. In my opinion an M4/M16 with the new gas op sys would be GREAT! Besides, the truth about it is if you asked any third world revolutionary(aka nutjob, dictator) What he would WISH to equip his army with he would tell you the M16. The only reason he doesn't is because he can only afford AK's and old FAL's. Example; I spent some time in South America (quite) a few years back. Communist guerrilas-no $$$-AKs. Drug lords-lots of $$$-a newer M-16 than the one Unc Sam gave me!

The AK series win over G-36 in votes because they basiclly are the same weapon, only updated or modified. They use the same mechanism and design.

If the XM8 didn't jam and was heavily high tech and computerized where it counted bullets, had zoom attached to your ckmputer thats part of your suit, all that stuff in the future, if it was as reliable like the AK47 I would've chosen it because it's more high tech if the idea was future assault rifles.

Otherwise, currently as the world is, I'd choose the AK47 both for my personal self defense and amusement as well as militarily.

Workmanship and preformance is probably a world apart. Btw I G-36 is not a AK-47 derivitive; it "apparently is a modification of older American Armlite AR-18 rifle, with its short stroke piston". Modern Firearms - Heckler-Koch HK G36 assault rifle

Why would a soldier need to carry more weighty doodads that does nothing is beyond me. Glass optics work just fine. A bullet counter is superfluous. You don't need a batterly power devouring digital device to tell you when you run out of bullets. If you can't afford to be caught with an empty magazine, you probably should consider reloading more often

Otherwise, currently as the world is, I'd choose the AK47 both for my personal self defense and amusement as well as militarily.

Thanks for saying that C. I was a soldier in the '80s and the only thing I had battery powered was a radio and a flashlight. Our computer was the human brain. I think the land soldier system and having a "mouse" on my m-16 is the biggest croc of s##t I've ever seen. "Oh! Time out Mr. Enemy, I need to put a fresh battery in my gun!" yea right! Believe me, when your in a hot situation you need as little as possible to divert your attention and the last thing you need is a damn computer!

http://images.military.com/pix/defen...0015259_a2.pdf this is the link to the troop survey on our small arms in use in Iraq. Being as I am so lazy I married a pregnant woman, I did not check previous posts to see if it was already posted. The best assault rifle is the one they give you?

Kind of an interesting thread here...
However I hate to say this... that an AK47 is so far ahead and the rifle that should be ahead is not, shows a lot about the people voting here and how much they know. Lets face it guys, it should be the SIG (with one or two being close contenders). However not the ones that are leading here... this here is more a popularity vote here..

And gosh those chirping in for the AK47... well try hitting something 500 yards away, or for that matter even just 200 yards... a guy with a SIG will have you for lunch 20 times before you can get a decent shot at him...
And someone preferring the M16 well try using your M16 in sand or with less cleaning or extreme circumstances... again many of the other contenders will have you for lunch while you spend time cleaning your rifle.
