as for a a leap over M16 it's just like any other rifle so far nothing really special that would be a Significant leap. it's about as much a leap as the Xm8 or G36 or Fn 2000 or any of the other new weapons of the past decade simmply a logical evilution and inclution of wanted features
I will hold off on that one until I see wide spread field issue of the Travor. I remeber how several IMI projects all claimed to be superior replacement for foreign weapons, and none of them became adapted.

I was using the words "signficant leap" in a sarcastic jab. Travor shoots 5.56. It has an electro-optical sight. I don't see the signficant leap here.

Neither do I. Assault rifles such as the SA-80 and G36 have optical sights as standard, and they've been around way before the Tavor.

Tavor was designed to use the Mars sight and even has a hole for the on button to be mounted but that does not mean it's an intagral part of it I have seen pics of it with other sights. almost every one seems to be picking up Red dots and illuminated optics these days it's a safe bet that they are going to be part of any new first and second world weapon. even the chinese have been roumored to have one for there Type 95 rifle.

    The best assault rifle

Well boys. Story goes like this, the best rifle is the one you have in your hand, when needed. But if you or me have to pick the best one there are no best rifle in absolut term! I have them almost all in my collection and in war and let me put this way: How much golf .... are in ones cady for the game, thats the story with the rifles. Open country needs a high power like 7,62 x 51& 7,62 x 54R but rural engagement well get your own picking!

Personaly I would put the SIG 55X on the top of your listm (and I did ) but I'll add also the Vektor R 4 & Series. The best made "direct" copy of AK, in 556, well the Sig is AK clone. Where areTavor, Zastava M21....etc.

I have to go with the SIG without any first hand knowledge.
I like the reliability of the AK's though, since "the best rifle is the one you have in your hand, when needed." Doesn't work if the rifle doesn't shoot.

    Yep.

I regard it quite highly and shot a vintage specimen recently with an old Sionics suppressor.

The Commando is a solid bit of kit and the size and weight is a real handy package.

On the older models, (where my experience is), removing the giant flash hider and swapping in a standard bird cage or one of those Vortex jobs makes it even shorther and more useful.

The big trouble with the Commando in my experience involved failures to extract resulting from the extractor tearing through the case rim and leaving the case stuck in the chamber. This occurred incessantly with with Winchester M193 loaded with ball powder but trial and error lead us to Malaysian M193 loaded with an IMResque powder which resulted in zero functioning problems over thousands of rounds.

Chalk it up to high port pressures, I guess.

    High guys,

Speaking of the Colt Commando, here is a picture of a pseudo Commando we built out of spare parts. The shotguns indicates scale.

I tend to view this weapon as a "thinking man's M16".

What we have hear is an A2 upper with a 10 inch chrome lined barrel mated to a safe-semi-full lower. The stock is from an A1 and we had a chromed bolt carrier lying around with nothing better to do.

Unsilenced, the combination of full stock and short barrel makes for fast handling, great control and accurate shooting out to the limitations of the short barrel.

The weapon is a little cranky with some loads but 100% with more than a few.

    Moving OT:

Incidentally, that 870 in the picture is high speed and low drag as well.

My pimp cannon started as a stock, 18 inch Remington 870 Police Magnum. The barrel has been ported, jug choked, back bored and forcing cone relieved. It will, from a sandbag, at 50 yards put all 8 pellets of a Remington trap velocity 8 pellet 00 load onto the white part of an FBI Q target. Even better, Brenneke's trap velocity one ounce slug shoots to the same point of aim at 50 yards and yields 2 1/2 inch groups of three.

Extras on that 870 include MMC ghost ring sights. The rear is secured to the receiver with 8 x 40 hex headed machine screws and the front sight is silver soldered, not pinned or epoxied like the lesser vendors do.

I added a sling swivel to the butt of the pistol grip for the obvious reasons and topped the whole thing off with a Wolff magz spring and a high visibility synthetic follower.

And no M21, it is nor for sale at any price !

All work performed almost a decade back by Hans Vang and Dennis Levy of www.vangcomp.com when the shop was in Goletta. Highly reccommended; their product performs as well or better than advertised and that is high praise indeed.

Oh, the 590A1: it is low serial number and box stock. It exists for wet work...literally : I keep it for use in and around water or boat cabins. Unfortunately, I do not own a boat so it is about as useful as a boat anchor but I hang on to it for sentimental reasons.

    Regards,

    William

I was in Israel last year and the troops I talked with were using early A-2s and CAR's.. They were old and looked it.... They were clean, just had a lot of wear and tear on the finish.....

I have only used M-14's and M-16's while in the service and I have never had a problem with either jamming after proper magazine break in (M-16 only). That includes loading a full 30 rounds in each magazine.

The only time I have ever had a jam in either of the AR sytle weapons I have owned (AR-15A2 and Colt match target competion HBAR-II) was on the HBAR and it was after emptying 4 - 30 round magazines of Wolf ammo at a fairly high rate of speed. I will never use Wolf ammo in a life threatening situation uless I run out of the other 3000 rounds of good stuff first.

I would like to see what a Springfield Armory Socom II would do in comparison to some of the other weapons listed. From what combat veterans have told me about AK series weapons, they are wonderfully reliable but the accuracy at any range beyond point blank is laughable. (Just repeating what I was told).

AK-47, rugged incredibly relaible and abuse resistant, steady supply of ammo worldwide. Weight helps absorb the recoil of the heavy round, Will easily defeat to medium body armors. Does not require skill to shoot but a skilled shooter can still hit relaibly past 300m etc. Other battle rifles might be better built and more reliable or out class it in every area of technical performance. However the chances of the indivual rifleman of any army being up to the level where those tolerances matter when enemy lead is coming his way is low. Long range shooting is for snipers and MG's (and the 120mm smoothbore the worlds best sniper rifle).

    AK family of assault rifles

My vote was for the Galil. There is no choice listed for the South African R-4. I would pick the R-4/5. The R-4 is derived (and licensed) from the Galil which derived from the Finish RK-62 which derived from the AK-47.

I have used the AK-47 in combat and found it an eminently useful and effective weapon. It was my second choice. I have to say I really did like the difference the 5.56mm cartridge made in the handling of the R-4.

The FAL (South African R-1) was a great sniper rifle but a handful as an assault rifle. The G-3 is a really smooth operating weapon but once again a bit much on full auto although not as bad as the R-1.

I have fired many of the others on the list but not in a combat situation

I think police forces on a budget who need to upgrade their firepower should think about getting AKs at a quarter of the cost of the M-4. There is a perceived bad boy image for the AK but that could possibly work in the polices favor.

If I had to pick one of those weapons to take to war, it would be the AK-47.

Weapons of war should be made of wood and steel, not alloy and plastic.
