According to the Arrsepedia (I'm sure you guys have heard of ARRSE)

    Quote:
9mm SMG, successor to the STEN gun. Known less-than-affectionately as the Small Metal Gun and a horrible piece of tat, especially when combined with the seriously piss-poor ammunition issued in the 80s. A popular sport at the time was to watch the bullet trickle out of the worn-out rifling and plummet to earth somewhere between 10 and 20 metres downrange.

Bill Hooks, my good man! Tosh. Humbug. Rubbish. What is quoted does not tally in any respect with the Sterling during my service career.

An amusing quirk was the tendency for the thing to go off if dropped. Deeply horrible but, somehow, quintessentially British Army.

More Bill Hooks. Tosh. Humbug and Rubbish.

Perhaps the best commentary on its popularity can be seen in the fact that given the choice, any soldier worth his salt in the 60s,70s and 80s preferred to carry the much larger, heavier SLR if at all possible, rather than this annoying and pointless piece of junk.

To which I reply in the language of the times KKCC which means Knickers, Knackers and Christmas Crackers!
AARRSE is great fun, providing you know something about the subject and are aware of the fact that the squaddie will emboider any tale to make it more amusing. I think it was Oscar Wilde who said "Believe only half the lies you are told"! (If it wasn't him, it should have been!!) )

    Andy,

No need to ask your friends. I think this clearly explains the difference. Our guns are shot nearly every day, 7 days a week, all year long. It sounds like the two MP5s we used yesterday saw more rounds yesterday (maybe 1,200) than all of yours do all year. I imagine that your SDs will have the same "disposable gun" problem if they ever get as much use as ours.

Your English is vastly superior to my German. I get lost beyond Maschinenpistole, Patronen, Sicher, Einzelfeuer, Dauerfeuer and, of course, schallgedämpfte.

    Thanks,
    -Jeff.

    @ glyn

lol, yeah I knew not to take it seriously. Whoever wrote up that article did seem to slate the Sterling more than they usually slate things though

You could have suggested the Uzi in .45. Or the M3, which is probably the toughest subgun there is. Every time we strip one down, there are cases inside that failed to eject, but just got crushed by the bolt and never caused a problem.

Oh man! I almost forgot about those. We played with those a bunch in training. The m3 and the m3a1. I liked the a1 the best. Good ol GE headlamp division!

Have you ever shot a Reising? Fun on the range, accurate, but the full mags rattle. Not good.

Oh, this reminds me of a story about a Thompson and Missouri. In 1999, I went to St Louis to speak at the SAF Gun Rights Policy Conference. At a local Kinkos, I met two older guys who were really downcast, writing letters to their Washington delegation. Turns out that one of them had captured a Thompson in Vietnam in the mid '60s, brought it back, and left it with his local police chief in case he needed to "fight hippies." The soldier went on to serve a full career in the Army all over the world, occasionally returning to shoot "his" SMG. The department loved the Thompson and bought a bunch, and everyone was happy.

Fast forward to 1999. The soldier had retired to home, and the town hired a new, young Chief. He inventoried his guns and sold off those old Thompsons, all except the bringback for which he had no paper. The town administration was aghast that they possessed an illegal machine gun, and everyone decided to have ATF destroy it. At the last minute, the old soldier found out what was happening, and when I ran across him he was in a last-ditch fight to try and get it papered as a Title 10 gun, so maybe the town or some museum could take legal possession of it. I spent a couple hours helping them with paperwork, but I doubt that he was ultimately successful.

I haven't shot the smg(that I recall anyway) and I can't remember if it was a Reising model 60 or a Marlin Camp .45 that I shot once. I think it was the camp that a friend of mine had. I remember I liked it and later he found a plastic side folder stock for it which made it even cooler. I think I want one now

I think its a lousy shame that we have so many historical pieces being destroyed by the uneducated. When I saw footage of some of the hanguns in G. Britain being destroyed I couldn't believe my eyes. Didn't matter what it was, how long it had been in the family, historical value, nothing mattered. Just a damn shame.

stan smg is the easyest smg to make, here in us you can buy a parts kit (every part of the gun, but reciver is cut up), than you buy a blank reciver tube, it even has a template for holes and slots to cut out, buy all that at a gun show, and a day later you got yourself working, smg. and it is untracable, there is no record of it anywhere, and there no need to show any id when buying those parts, thou it is illegal, but it doesn,t stop ppl from doing it.

It would be better if you asked people what their "favorite" SMG is rather than "best" SMG.

Last year, the Philipinos had re-adopted the M3A1 for their Marines. That is not bad at all for a sixty-year old workhorse.

Which would you prefer to go to war with, the MP-40 or M3?

I found the MP40 doable, never had the chance to fire the M3.
