Both Solothurn cartridges are belted.

So, I can see it being theoretically possible to fire the shorter cartridge in the larger gun, although it would be a pretty sloppy fit, perhaps requiring the use of some sort of adapter or chamber block, but its very likely that some of the firing pressure will leak back and damage the mechanism.
He'd said that it did crack the breach, sounds like they were lucky it didn't blow up in their face. Just goes to show how hard it is to soldier proof ordnance, they'll always find a way! This is one more of those "possible but not reccomended" things, like shooting shotshells in your flare pistol.)

If PPSh had better workmanship, maybe. As far as I know, many of the drum mags had to be hand-fitted. After being fitted, the gunsmith would etch the serial number of the gun it was fitted to on the magazine itself. The stick mags seem to work just fine though.

The PPSh mags we sent to Iraq were just pulled out of a box. They worked fine with the pickup gun my buddy was using.

PPSh's drum, it is said, was vulnerable to mud and when loaded full wore out the spring. The same reason IIRC led to the US Army's replacement of Thompson's drum with stick magazine.

Oh, so he was one of those guys with a PPSh-41 strapped on the side? Are WWII era guns common in Iraq?

I have no idea how common they are. He needed a gun and found one of those in perfect condition, but couldn't find any mags or ammo, so those items were shipped to him.
