Izhmash, the manufacturer of assault rifle AK-47, or Kalashnikov, officially went bankrupt over unpaid debts, according to the Russian Ria Rovosti news agency.

More than 100 million AK-type rifles are estimated to have been built since they were first introduced by inventor Mihail Kalashnikov in 1947.

Izhmash is a unit of the Russian Technologies Corporation, a state holding company with mining, arms and automotive assets.

A court has given the green light to Izmash factory being wound up, following a lawsuit issued by a creditor owed 814,000 rubles ($275,000). The Kalashnikov maker is now in receivership, and an administrator has been appointed by the court.

The bankruptcy is part of the re-organization procedure that was launched last year by Kalashnikov’s parent company, Russian Technologies State Corporation. Its director Maksim Kuzyuk said the bankruptcy procedure would help save the brand and most of the company’s property.

Izhmash, which has 5.3 billion ruble loan debts, registered 2.4 billion rubles of loss in 2011. Its production volume decreased by 45.5 percent last year. A major blow for Izmash came when the Russian Defence Ministry announced that it would not purchase the newly-created rifle the AK-12, which was unveiled in February.

Of all the weapons in the vast soviet arsenal, nothing
was more profitable than Avtomat Kalashnikova model of 1947. More
commonly known as the AK-47, or Kalashnikov. Its the worlds most
popular assault rifle. A weapon all fighters love. An elegantly
simple 9 pound amalgamation of forged steel and plywood. It doesnt
break, jam, or overheat. Itll shoot whether its covered in mud or
filled with sand. Its so easy, even a child can use it; and they
do. The Soviets put the gun on a coin. Mozambique put it on their
flag. Since the end of the Cold War, the Kalashnikov has become the
Russian peoples greatest export. After that comes vodka, caviar,
and suicidal novelists. One thing is for sure, no one was lining up
    to buy their cars.

I recall seeing some spectacular stats for the AK47

Stockholm Institute estimated of the known small arms used in 3rd world conflict some 90% were AK's.
Spawned so many knock offs and licensed prod.

You have to wonder whether all the knock off builds did the company in - eg some 20m+ were estimated to be unlicensed builds

Personal preference. For some, sliding your finger down onto the trigger shaves a couple milliseconds off lifting your finger off the grip and onto the trigger.

but you cant push the safety down while holding the grip, because the finger does not reach that far forward and the safety is rigid enough.

he has to let go of the grip and press the safety down with the right hand thumb,
so keeping his finger that way does not help.

In the end, a shooter will always hold the gun in the way he's most comfortable

IIRC, the gold-plated AK (and the pistols) were found in Saddam Hussein's personal collection.

Is that gold engraving on the grenades too? What a deal - money to burn it appears.

Who's got a shortage of money when you rule a country and couldn't even give a runny shite about your citizens/slaves?
