Steel is going up and up. Buying from Grainger or McMaster is about the most expensive way to get it.

Look in your local yellow pages under 'metal fabrication'. Find a fab shop that does shearing and forming. They will have scraps from full plates left over. You can measure the back of your cabinet and have them shear out a piece that fits, if you need the edges broke they can to that too.

Most shops will cut you some slack on a "rem"- chances are they already expensed the material to another job. Call around and ask if they have any rems left over, and give them the size you are looking for.

It only takes a couple minutes to shear it to the right size, you should be able to get what you need for a decent price if you can't scrounge a piece from work.

Good news on two fronts. One, Cabela's customer service rocks. I called after hours on Saturday around 11 p.m., and some time around 2 p.m. Sunday they called me back and it was straightened out.

Two, just as I was leaving work a buddy from the vehicle engineering lab called, and showed me a rather large plate of aluminum that I can use. It isn't steel, but it is free. That does mean I won't be able to weld it, instead I'll need some good fasteners, but I can always get it done with the aluminum and wait for more old stuff to be thrown out. Rumor has it that since we bought a competitor, we'll be moving to a larger building to accept the extra people. I'm sure we'll toss some old equipment instead of moving it.

That's a good side story...The other company won two pieces of business that we were bidding for. One was high profile, one has high volume. So we just bought their company

Bought it, love it. Carried open for the first time today while taking my kids for a walk. I felt really weird at first, but settled into normality in a few minutes.

My personal preference, and I carry concealed on a daily basis, is for Galco. They seem to be better made, with better leather and craftsmanship. I've used them for years and never had any complaints. They wear like iron.

I don't know, depending on the type of contact iron wears out horribly

For sliding contact I'd much rather have a high-carbon steel, preferably case carburized :P

    Just kidding.
