.338 Lapua: which style do you like?

The .338 Lapua has become quite popular, It comes in classic Bolt Action styling, like the Rem 700, the AR/Bolt action Barrett Style, and even a semi auto are style.....The question, which do you like best and why?

    Steyr SSG08,AX 338,Sako TRG42,B&T APR 338.

The issue is the insane price for ammo.7-8 times the price for a match 308.I also think it's too small for an true anti-material rifle. It's however the ultimate AP sniper rifle,IMO.Better performance than 308,better terminal ballistics, twice the range. Thus I don't like them as semi-autos.

As much as i like semi-auto, I would probably go for the Chey-Tac or AI bolt guns. I hate bushmaster in general, but I do like thier AR version in the awesome .338 LM.

The Barrett in the video seemed to have a really nice bolt action, and I prefer the pistol grip type stock as well, but like the look of the classic Rem 700. Cannot fathom why FN does not have a .338 Lapua Mag offering. Not sure I would have that much faith in the semi offerings, as they are not "Name" manufacturers, like a Barrett.

Cheytac's M300 .338 LM with a Hensoldt 6-24x72mm (top shelf Zeiss FL glass) in Badger Ordnance rings should be an excellent long range rifle, using COTS components.

But for a lot less money...

Might be worth looking at Savage Arms' 110 BA .338 LM (SKU 18900), $2394 MSRP, currently selling new for around $1800-$1900 market retail. Savage has really stepped up in the last couple of decades.

A review that is not just a rehash of the marketing brochure

short blog review with interesting comments below the blog entry

FWIW, I'd rather have a buttstock that has a bottom nearer parallel to the bore centerline, for shooting off of a bench rest and bags, as I'd only be using it from a bench at a shooting range. That is not really applicable to anybody using it for what it was optimized to do. And it wouldn't stop me from buying one.

    .

And another good value is SWFA's new SS 5-20x50mm HD, mil/mil, with illuminated or non-illuminated FFP "Mil-Quad" reticle (see pic below). It is a step up from the popular Nightforce NSX at a competitive price, and is signicantly less than half the price of this Schmidt&Bender PMii 5-25x56mm mil/mil with illuminated FFP P4F reticle and CCW double turn turrets.

Here are links to SWFA's SS 5-20x50mm HD, both the non-illuminated version (SKU SSHD520X50MQ, $1300), and the illuminated version (SKU SSHD520X50MQI, $1500)

A brief review and comparison to Nightforce NSX 3-15x50 and 5.5-22x50.

Review at SnipersHide and some later discussion

And FWIW, I have no affiliation with those businesses, am not spamming or shilling.

I have had the SAVAGE under consideration, Local dealer has one. But things change, so the rifle is on the back burner till after the hip replacement, and since I have the Trust set up to go Class 3, That changes priorities as well. .338 is still on the list, just won't get one till I can do the prone position.
