    Hi,

I am writing a novel, and while I know little about sniper rifels and guns in general I decided to post my question here. Thanks beforehand!

The price set aside, what would you say is the best sniper rifle(s) for professional use, and why??

Well first, why don't you stop by member intros and tell us a little about yourself. Then I would ask, what kind of "professional" use? Desert, Jungle, Urban, what kind of environment? What range? What is the target?

I assume you mean professional military use, and I would have to put out the British L115A3 Long Range Rifle, which is an Accuracy International AW in .338 calibre (one the most stable flying, long range capable rifle cartridges is the .338 Lapua Magnum) with tactical muzzle break (allows for the attachment of a suppressor, which reduces the visible flash and audible noise produced by firing the weapon), folding stock (allowing for more compact storage), butt spike (gives you increased stability while aiming the weapon), adjustable cheek piece (provides greater comfort when looking through the sight), a Schmidt & Bender 5-25 x 56 Police Marksman II LP scope (produces a great deal of magnification for aiming at far away targets), and an adjustable bipod (allowing the rifle to hold itself up at a variety of heights, reducing the amount of shaking caused by the user).

If you mean target shooting or the like, I might suggest a Ruger 10/22, though I'm personally not as familiar with non-military firearms.

The 0.50- cal Barrett rifle is a fine sniper weapon (few weapons are its equal), though it is best suited for open areas where its long range can be fully exploited. I like the 10-22 for regular target shooting too, fine little rifle.

The radio gets the mortar ... and everything else ... without giving up observable evidence of your presence. Let somebody else receive the counter-fire.

I agree that the Barrett M82 is a fine sniper rifle, but if you were in an open area, the .338 Lapua cartridge provides superior range and accuracy and is sufficient to kill a soldier as readily as the .50 BMG. The only time I would think there would be preference to the M82 would be in an anti-materiel role.
