Winchester kept the .30 WCF on the headstamp up until the '40's, then changed it to .30-30. Today we call it the .30-30 Winchester, but it was actually Marlin that introduced it under that name.
Yep. WCF is still a parenthetical even today.

What sort of smokeless powder did the 2nd "30" in .30/30 refer to?

Could be the energy generated by the smokeless that was equivalent to 30 grains of black powder?

It was called "Marlin Smokeless" by UMC, who manufactured the ammo for Marlin. Winchester called it "DuPont .30 cal Smokeless" in their old powder guides.

You can load a modern equivalent with 30 grains of 4064.

IIRC it was equal to 45 grains of B.P., or thereabouts.

No, it referred to 30 grains of smokeless (whatever was used at the time). Same goes for the .30-40. It was just a leftover from the BP cartridge nomenclature. I'm guessing that maybe different formulas of "smokeless" caused this naming system to break down rather quickly, but that's just my guess.

Don't forget Remington's copy of the .30-30: The .30 Remington. This was basically a rimless version of the above.

    That's awesome......probably need a 40 inch barrel to completely burn that powder charge.....so,with a 55gr bullet that's probably around 6000fps?

    Not quite 6,000 but tested loads were as follows;

    Using a 50gr projectile,

    100gr of H570,,,4,170fs.
    102gr of H570,,,4,390fs.
    105gr of H570,,,4,600fs.

Later development would have seen better velocities no doubt but with such a small projectile, not that much better.

The .378 Weatherby was necked to give a 40 degree shoulder so I would imagine reloading the same shell more than a couple of times would be out and the barrel would not last that much longer.

The original rifle was made for Mr. Bob Hutton of Guns and Ammo Magazine.

    Cheers.

Hey guy's do you think it will be a good idea if US arms manufacturers goes in metric system instead the old english one?So instead .30-06 we can say 7.62x63mm or .300win mag will be 7.62x67mm???Im just curious what you think?
The german 7.92x57 was called 8mm mauser, but is 7.92x57.For example the SU during the cold war was miss leading the enemy by lying for the real weapons calibers. What I mean-for example 9mm makarov i not 9x18mm,but 9.3x18mm.The 5.45x39 is actually 5.61x39.5mm etc.I guess they didn't want the west the make compatible weapons.I've herd that billets of 7.62x51 could be used for AK47,because the diameter is .308,the AK barrel/bullet diameter is .311.But not vice versa.Im not sure if its true,I read it long time ago.SU made most of there calibers/weapons to be able to use NATO bullets(not cartridges, just the bullets).Im sorry if I went off topic.
