A house full of cats and a baseball bat with a few nails in it. Nothing spooks a burglar like stepping on a cat, and a nail-filled bat wounds severely but also lets you see the scum get thrown in jail.
And also lets the scum return on release armed with a molotov :(

IMO , a 12 gauge 3 inch chambered for magnum shells , stevens savage 5 shot pump should do it , better still a semi auto , complimented with home security systems .

failing that a wife who you have just refused a new pair of shoes or handbag to , ask the Col .

The reasons i like this gun is because it is very LEO friendly. No cop I ever met had a problem with the P38 pistol because it is low capacity (only 8 + 1 rounds), does not have an aggressive rate of fire, and is not particularly small and easily concealed.
That said, the gun is fairly cheap, very efficient, quite accurate, simple to clean and maintain, uses the cheap 9mm parabellum, and handles very nicely.

As a homeguard weapon, it is also quite desirable for its safeties are quite reliable; usueful if you have little kids around who have not been fully trained in gun safety. For nearly perfect safety, a simple folded up cotton-wad pad (like those used in makeup application) under the hammer renders the gun utterly harmless.

I can get the gun out of the drawer, primed and ready to fire, in under 3 seconds. All you got to do is yank, flick the wad, and with your trigger finger hit the safety. Done deal!
Interesting choice. I would have suggested a Sig P6 as they are also cheap and plentiful, but not as cheap as the Walther P1 and lacks a manual safety.

We can get a P1 here (at least in the free states) for $300 a pop. P38 with Nazi proof markings will run more, but not too much. Of course these are surpluses, not collector items or war trophies.

Mainly a choice from personal experience. I happened to have acquired a P38 from a friend who died in a car crash a few years ago and compared to other guns, it has been one of the least troublesome. My grandparents were always having to argue with their local LEOs over their bigger and heavier weapons but show them the P38 and they don't give it a second's thought. If anything, the fact that it is hard to mistake a P38 for anything else makes the LEOs happy because it makes it easier to identify if they end up being shot at with one. Anything that keeps my sheriff happy keeps my gun collection, as pitiful as it is at the moment, safe; a very important consideration for gun owners these days.

Good God, man! How the hell did the nation that once ruled a quarter of the Earth's land surface and proudly proved that guns defeat natives with spears consistently turn into such a bunch of pansies and wimps? I pity you poor beggers. God Save the Queen, but only if she bloody well restores gun-ownership!

Just for clarification, are you calling all Brits 'pansies and wimps'?

Mods, if he is, can I have some give on the chain with this one?

I think he means our Glorious leaders S/C , and ya know something , he may be right about the wimps bit as we DONT protest enough for our rights , unlike the Frogs ( begrudging admiration ) the norm for the brits these days is , head in the sand and f#ck you jack im alright , we expect the govt and the police to protect the populace , but they dont and when someone protects themselves , its the victim who is hauled before the courts , usually because they have violated the scum bags human rights .But we know we aint ALL wimps n pansies , but its an impression the rest of the world perceives these days, because of the policy makers , wankers

    I vote 4.10 shotgun.

Universal in ability to be handled by people regardless of Gender or age thats gauranteed results with little after affects... and for your more beefy guy with stronger wrists ability to be shot from behind cover.

Kids and females with no experience of shooting have difficulty with the noise/recoil - especially with a fear induced state, and usually the reaction from the firearm makes them panic.

If Autos is not a problem, well them go for a SMG with a big - ass clip in it...

Otherwise just get a damned dog... they are a good retreat from the others when they are on your nerves! Besides, placing your faith in yourself - if your anything like me, sometimes you wake easily, othertimes you sleep through explosions.

know how to use a speakerphone... every mobile has one these days.

Of course its all irrevelant if you live in one of our "informed democracies" where we call the police to save us.

They will get you for violating the local noise ordanace if you use them, anymore probably worse than the penalty for shooting somebody, and they will say it contributed to global warming and the EPA will sue you. Of course if you located small wind power generation devices that would turn when the claymores blow, you might be able to get "Stimulus cash"
