I saw the importance of having such a friend recently when an influx of German P6 pistols hit the US market. Some people have reported obtaining never issued P6s in pristine condition, complete with new box and test target still packed away with the instruction booklet. They ordered through the internet.

Mine has excellent interiors but with only about 60% bluing left on the exterior. I had to get mine though a local store. :(

I asked the stores how much they charge for internet orders and they said $150 per transaction.

Cruise over to the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) M1 Garand Sales page and see what’s available. The CMP offers about the best bang for your buck out there. And you are getting a real piece of history too.

Check out the Eligibility Requirements to see if you qualify. It’s a lot easier than it was 20 yrs. ago.

Review the Ordering Information and down load the CMP ORDER FORM or the ORDER FORM - FILLABLE.

I would recommend the service grade.

SERVICE GRADE: (Good to Very Good)
Service Grade Rifles show less wear and better appearance than Field or Rack Grades. Good to very good condition. Rifle wear will be exhibited by worn and mixed colors of the parkerized finish. There may be some minor pitting on the metal parts. Wood will be either Walnut, Birch, Beech or other variety and will be basically sound but may have minor hairline cracks, dings, scratches and gouges. Wood may not match in color or type of wood. Wood may be of new production on Service Grade Garands. Bores will be generally good with only minor imperfections. The barrel crown may be nicked, but the muzzle will gauge less than 3 and the throat erosion will gauge less than 5.

For $617.50 ( $595.00 + $22.50 ) you can have a CMP M1 Garand delivered to your doorstep with out the use of a FFL holder.

No FFL needed? Are you sure?

How hard is it to join the program? Do I have to qualify or something? This just might be worth looking into.

This is where I got mine back when I was still active duty. It took a while but the Garand I received was right out of refurbishment. I ran my serial number and found my rifle was produced/issued in 1943, was re-manufactured in 1949 and stayed in storage until it was delivered to me.

The wood has many bangs on it, but the receiver, bolt, extractor, breech and barrel are mint. I highly recommend the CMP.

After a couple of clips and clicks, that baby was dialed in at 100 yards right out of the box.

    25 bucks. Range is hot.

    Eligibilty Requirements for Purchase
By law, the CMP can sell surplus military firearms, ammunition, parts and other items only to members of CMP affiliated clubs who are also U.S. citizens, over 18 years of age and who are legally eligible to purchase a firearm.

    Proof of U.S. Citizenship:
You must provide a copy of a U.S. birth certificate, passport, proof of naturalization, or any official government document that shows birth in the U.S. or states citizenship as U.S.

    Proof of Age:
You must provide proof of age. Usually proof of citizenship also provides proof of age. In those cases where it may not, a driver’s license is sufficient.

    Membership in CMP Affiliated Organization:
You must provide a copy of your current membership card or other proof of membership. This requirement cannot be waived. The CMP currently has over 2,000 affiliated organizations located in many parts of the country.
Membership in many of these organizations costs $25.00 or less and can be accomplished online. A listing of affiliated organizations can be found by clicking on our at Club Search web page. If you have any difficulty in locating a club, please contact the CMP at 256-835-8455 or by emailing CMP Customer Service. We will find one for you. In addition to shooting clubs, the CMP also has several special affiliates. Membership in these organizations satisfies our requirement for purchase. These special affiliates include: Congressionally chartered veterans' organizations such as the VFW, AL, DAV, MCL, etc. U.S. Military services (active or reserves), National Guard, to include retirees. Professional 501(c)3 law enforcement organizations and associations such as the FOP, NAPO, NSA, etc.
Note: Club membership IS required for purchase of rifles, parts, and ammunition.
Club membership is NOT required for instructional publications or videos or CMP memorabilia.

Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity:
You must provide proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity or otherwise show familiarity with the safe handling of firearms and range procedures. Your marksmanship related activity does not have to be with highpower rifles; it can be with smallbore rifles, pistols, air guns or shotguns. Proof of marksmanship participation can be provided by documenting any of the following:
    - Current or past military service.
    - Current or past law enforcement service
    - Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun competition (provide copy of results bulletin).
    - Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included live fire training (provide a copy of the certificate of completion or a statement from the instructor).
    - Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status.
    - Concealed Carry License.
    - Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included live fire training.
    - FFL or C&R license.
    - Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training.
    - Certification from range or club official or law enforcement officer witnessing shooting activity. A form for use in completing and certifying your range firing can be downloaded from the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/forms/marksmanship.pdf

No proof of marksmanship required if over age 60. proof of club membership and citizenship required for all ages.

NOTE: Proof of marksmanship activity is not required for purchase of ammunition, parts, publications or memorabilia.

Be Legally Eligible to Purchase a Firearm:
The information you supply on your application will be submitted by the CMP to the FBI National Instant Criminal Check System (NICS) to verify you are not prohibited by Federal, State or Local law from acquiring or possessing a rifle. Your signature on the Purchaser Certification portion of the purchase application authorizes the CMP to initiate the NICS check and authorizes the FBI to inform CMP of the result. IMPORTANT: If your State or locality requires you to first obtain a license, permit, or Firearms Owner ID card in order to possess or receive a rifle, you must enclose a photocopy of your license, permit, or card with the application for purchase.

Order Form and Purchaser Certification and Agreement:
Order forms and other required documents may be downloaded from http://www.odcmp.com/Forms/1orderform.pdf. For those customers who receive our hard-copy catalog, we recommend they make several copies of the blank form for use in placing future orders. Customers should complete both the Order Form and the Purchaser Certification and Agreement and sign it before a notary. Orders received without notarized signature will not be processed.

Right off the Eligibility Requirements web page.

I still don't see anything that says they'll ship to non-FFL holders. Local shop charges $150 per transaction (non private parties). Transaction between private parties within CA is something like $35. Maybe the rifle can be shipped to the club since it's a affiliate.

I looked at the links of affiliates and most of them are ROTC programs. Do you know if they are open to non-ROTC members?

    Gun,

That's how I got mine. They sent it to the skeet club at my air base.

Unless there is a State or local law that prevents it, it's sent from Uncle Sam to your front door.

    Gun,

You can always join the California Rifle And Pistol Association (CRPA). I’m a life member, shameless plug.

    Or The Garand Collectors Association.

Even the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA).

Depends on where you are located if there is a local club. I was at the Presidio of San Francisco in the early 80’s when I joined CRPA.

BTW, I'm mailing out another order packet for a service grade M1 Garand tonight.

    GAU,

I know if you are OCONUS firearms have to be shipped to a US military gun club. For CONUS I can see if you’re living in the barracks (sorry, dormitories for the USAF) and not in quarters or off post/base.

The total is $617.95 with $22.95 for shipping.

It used to be $22.50, m-kay. CRS

Got my service grade Garand yesterday.

    Order Date 19SEP08, shipped 25SEP08.

A couple days in the mail, a week to process the order, another week to pull and ship.

Surprised me, I was expecting the 45-60 days wait.

Cleaned and inspected today, getting ready to head out and put some rounds through her. Even got a bonus grenade sight base.

And yes it was delivered to my doorstep requiring adult signature. )
