I live outside of D.C. and love the city for many reasons, but not including the gun ban.

The ban is pretty pointless since you can just drive 20 minutes into either Maryland or Virginia (D.C. is really small geographically), do a straw purchase, and sneak the gun back into D.C.

The city has outrageous problems with violent crime: There are only about 500,000 residents, but there seems to be at least one shooting every day. One part of D.C. has such a problem with drive-by shootings that the D.C. police put the affected neighborhood in lockdown by setting up ID checkpoints at all the main roads. This just started a few weeks ago and is still ongoing. So the gun ban is doing nothing to really keep the criminals from getting their hands on guns.

And of course, non-gun crimes (muggings, burglaries, car thefts, fights, rapes) are much more common.

They need to relax gun laws in the District to help law-abiding people defend themselves. I don't see how it could lead to a situation worse than the current.

Not to mention that DC, Virginia and Maryland need to cooperate on having weapons permits be able to work in all of the areas, since there is a large percentage of people who work in DC but reside in Virginia and Maryland and will thus still not be able to carry and protect themselves during half of the day.

Maryland and Virginia differ considerably in CCW laws: In the latter it is very easy to get one while in the former it is basically impossible.

But yes, I agree that D.C. should honor CCW permits from other states.

Liberation Day is here. Supreme Court overturns DC gun ban says there is an individual right to own guns.

Court rules in favor of Second Amendment gun right

By MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices' first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.

The court's 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment. The decision went further than even the Bush administration wanted, but probably leaves most firearms laws intact.

The court had not conclusively interpreted the Second Amendment since its ratification in 1791. The amendment reads: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

The basic issue for the justices was whether the amendment protects an individual's right to own guns no matter what, or whether that right is somehow tied to service in a state militia.

Writing for the majority, Justice Antonin Scalia said that an individual right to bear arms is supported by "the historical narrative" both before and after the Second Amendment was adopted.

The Constitution does not permit "the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home," Scalia said. The court also struck down Washington's requirement that firearms be equipped with trigger locks.

In a dissent he summarized from the bench, Justice John Paul Stevens wrote that the majority "would have us believe that over 200 years ago, the Framers made a choice to limit the tools available to elected officials wishing to regulate civilian uses of weapons."

He said such evidence "is nowhere to be found."

Justice Stephen Breyer wrote a separate dissent in which he said, "In my view, there simply is no untouchable constitutional right guaranteed by the Second Amendment to keep loaded handguns in the house in crime-ridden urban areas."

Joining Scalia were Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy and Clarence Thomas. The other dissenters were Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David Souter.

The capital's gun law was among the nation's strictest.

Dick Anthony Heller, 66, an armed security guard, sued the District after it rejected his application to keep a handgun at his home for protection in the same Capitol Hill neighborhood as the court.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled in Heller's favor and struck down Washington's handgun ban, saying the Constitution guarantees Americans the right to own guns and that a total prohibition on handguns is not compatible with that right.

The issue caused a split within the Bush administration. Vice President Dick Cheney supported the appeals court ruling, but others in the administration feared it could lead to the undoing of other gun regulations, including a federal law restricting sales of machine guns. Other laws keep felons from buying guns and provide for an instant background check.

Scalia said nothing in Thursday's ruling should "cast doubt on long-standing prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons or the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings."

The law adopted by Washington's city council in 1976 bars residents from owning handguns unless they had one before the law took effect. Shotguns and rifles may be kept in homes, if they are registered, kept unloaded and either disassembled or equipped with trigger locks.

Opponents of the law have said it prevents residents from defending themselves. The Washington government says no one would be prosecuted for a gun law violation in cases of self-defense.

It should have been a 9 - 0 ruling, the anti gun lobby may try to appeal the decision because it wasn't 100%.

BTW, CONGRATULATION'S you now have a real right to own and arm bears....LOL

Great news!

I propose a toast to law-abiding citizens everywhere, especially in places where their rights are once again re-acknowledged!

If you look in the dictionary under "Idiots" you will find pictures of these two. What does that jackleg Stevens not see as evidence? How about.."A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Breyer is just a fool! But hey the good guys beat the bad guys again I will go home and hug my firearms!

What the hell was Breyer's logic anyway? Where would I more likely need to have a handgun loaded and ready to defend my family, in a secluded Hawaii beach bungalow or in South Central?

Heh, this is the same bunch of people who somehow "found" the constitutional right for a woman to have an abortion.

I do agree with one thing though, a lot of the rights in the constitution are somewhat conditional. Can't vote if you're underage. Can't run for president if you aren't natural born. And felons shouldn't be able to own firearms.

Typical liberal elitist mentality. They believe police protection is adequate for the people. Meanwhile they have either armed body guards or CCW, as in the case of the esteemed senator Diane Feinstein from California, a leading "gun control" advocate, somehow is able to protect her person by carrying a gun while police protection is enough for her constituents.

Hypocrites, the lot of them.

They can't appeal the decision, this is the final stop. The Supreme Court is the final appeals court in US jurisprudence. It's not like Europe where there is a court of human rights that supersedes sovereign laws. The Supreme Court would have to reverse itself to please the anti-gun people-and that is something it is loathe to do. Plessy v. Ferguson wasn't overturned for 48 years, and Roe v. Wade has been on the books for 35 years. It could be another 30-40 years before the Court takes up another gun case, and actually overturns Heller.

I remember a song that goes something like:

And when I wake I know its a quarter to eight, because I hear the sirens and know that they're a half hour late, get a call from Dwayne, only to hear that another person was slain, its a shame

It would be wonderful for that to happen here...

Yesterday I called around at various shooting ranges in NY to see what their policy on underage shooters. I made sure to include that I had been through a 10 hour hunter's safety course and have fired a multitude of firearms, from a .38sp to an Uzi. No dice. Even though I am a mature 16 year old with prior experience, a somewhat intimate knowledge of firearms, under the supervision of my father (who is a federal law enforcement officer). We would be willing to waive the rights associated with liability and it is apparent we are quite able (especially because I can fire assault weapons in Pennsylvania). I realize this isn't a right but it is ludicrous that I can't fire my own father's firearm, under his supervision, with all liability waived within a several hundred mile radius of my house.

/Rant

when i go to a range in l.i. i can bring anyone i wish, as long as they aren,t under 12, however this is only for rifles, when i bring a pistol, i can,t let shoot anyone, perod. once i went with my friend a nypd officer, we swap guns, and they saw it on camera, rangemaster came into our room, and was gonna give us a long speech, untill my friend showed him his badge, no more problems since than.
try nassau colesuim range, right by hofstra uneversity, i don,t think if you go there with your father, a federal leo, they will give you any problems, that is a very nice indoor 75ft range.

I don't know why anyone whose father is a LEO should be granted special privileges, I didn't have such luck and had to wait until I fulfilled the legal requirements, like it or not, and I damned well hated it.

I personally would ask you to move on even if your father is a LEO., as if for some reason at a later date you upset him he may charge you for breeching the rule's.

BTW., while I was a gun sales person I let two Polizei guy's go home to get their paperwork before selling them ammo was their reaction, but they both complied.
