H&K USP vs. Glock

My father is looking for a semi-inexpensive pistol for home defense and to practice with at the range. He wants to get a Glock because he has heard good things about it and it is a houshold name. Meanwhile I would lean towards a USP simply because I don't like the Glock.

What merits/problems do either pistol have? I don't really know Glocks very well, what model would be suggested? (he wants a mid-size .40S&W) Thanks.

i really don,t see much difference between the two, they are both good guns, the key is the shooter.
i voted for glock, cuz it is cheaper, has wider assesories market, and custom parts.

I've never liked the ergonomics of the Glock. Haven't tried a USP. Perhaps he should go to a range where he could try shooting both and see which one he likes?

I have voted for the Glock, as I have had one for 12 years.

I don't know how old your Dad is or even how well build he is, but them .40 bullets have a lot of recoil out of the Tupperware handguns.

I'd say go for a Glock 19 or even a Glock 17 in 9mm, or even a Glock 36 sub compact in .45ACP.

The H&K USP Compact in .40 is a good self defence weapon, but they also make them in the venerable old .45ACP.

Tony

BTW., Leib will be here soon steaming about the H&K's

Is this about what you want/fancy or about what your Dad needs?

Cheers.

First of all, the best gun for you has to be the gun that fits you, that you shoot well.

That being said, I have extensive, high round count experience with multiple examples of both guns, and based on that experience:

Glocks tend to be the least expensive major brand, mass production semi-autos. HKs cost a lot more, and are markedly less durable. Parts from HK cost more than from any other major manufacturer. HK customer service starts at 'very poor' and goes down from there. Unless there is some compelling reason for you to buy an HK, I would not recommend any of their handguns or subguns except the USP, which they seem to have gotten right.

In the interest of full disclosure, I do not - and have never - personally owned either an HK or Glock handgun.

Who makes that Glock stock? I don't recognize it, and it is a lot more compact than anything I have used.

I disagree pretty much with everything you said about the HK except for the expensive spares.

I've had my USP for a couple years and I've never had a single problem with it. It's the best pistol I've ever owned or shot. As for Glocks, I can't stand the grip angle and the lack of a safety.

Best home defence weapon would be a 12 guage

That's an entirely different question. Would I rather have a Glock or my fists? A Glock of course! They're not trash by any standards, I just happen to prefer the USP. If I could say with a clear conscience that I prefer the Glock, I would say so.

@toemag

I can only speak based on my experiences.
