9mm in a .40 will usually fire OK, but generally will not extract/eject the fired case because it becomes bulged and out of round. Some guns will fire more than once while being so abused, but usually the gun becomes a manual repeater. In extreme cases the gun must be hammered open. I have seen one [brand new] MP-5 in .40 that was destroyed by an idiot who loaded up the mag with 9mm ammo and proceeded to try and dump the whole mag with one trigger pull. After he plugged the barrel with bulged 9mm cases, a couple more rounds fired and blew out the mag well.

    That's a damn shame.

BTW, my USP is in .40 S&W.

I also went for the elegance of the Thompson. They still found their way into service long after WWII.

How do you like the .40? I find from others that its a real hate it or love affairs with that caliber, never shot it myself.

Never heard of that rather amusing little trait. Still, what can you reasonably expect from a sub machine gun that cost less than 5 shillings to make. Try getting 4 SMGs today for under a pound!

IMO a Thompson SMG, I have fired a Sten, rapid fire but they do tend to jam now & then, not a good idea in a hand-to-hand

I have heard that myself. Isn't the ammo for .40 more costly?

"The Armory" have them in stock; box of 50, S & W 155GR $26.99, special pack $14.99 for a limited time only, the blurb goes "these are law enforcement grade, with much greater stopping power than the civilian hollow-points"
    Jeez!!, will these muthas do??

It's exactly what everybody says it is: a good compromise between the low recoil and high capacity of 9mm and the stopping power of .45. It's got pretty snappy recoil (except in my USP, which is comparable to most 9mm's in terms of recoil) but nothing uncontrollable. If you have the right ammo the results on soft targets is pretty impressive.

I don't really love it. I just like it for what it is; the middle ground between 9mm and .45ACP.

The 7.62 Tokarev round that the PPSh fires is actually fairly powerful. When ft.lbs are measured, more powerful than the .45 and the 9mm. I believe it was the most powerful handgun round until the 357 mag came out in 1935. Overpenetration is a factor but fit the Russian doctrin of massed fire and assault well. The PPSh was fairly reliable, cheap to make, easy to use, had high rate of fire combined with high capacity, coupled with controlability. I would choose it over the other choices mentioned.
