It just won't stop raining. Everytime I even think about going to the range it rains. Can't complain, we won't have to restrict our water usage when August comes around because of all the rain we're getting. Then I can have squirt gun battles with my 3 year old nephew. Everytime we're at the store its, "Can I have that squirt gun? I go shoot you." and so he can imitate HALO or Gears of War.

A friend just helped me sight in my Garand. I shot only 1 clip because I needed an ice pack after that.

The good news is I shot a 4" group at 100 yards from a bench rest using iron sights only. Is that acceptable?

So far, I can't get much better than that on my Mosin. Seems pretty acceptable.

Put a sweatshirt under the but of the stock next time, it dampens quite well, even if it looks like it won't do much. I've shot 60-80 times at an outing and not had my shoulder feel iffy.

Damn, it doesn't kick THAT bad!

Try shooting Federal Magnum-loaded slugs out of a Mossberg 500 with 18" barrel. THAT hurts.

I've shot magnum slugs out of a single shot shotgun with 24" barrel. That was not cool.

That's definitely something I will consider.

First, I need to have someone put on the brand new stock I bought for the Garand. The old stock looks like it was salvaged from the Santa Maria when she crossed the Atlantic in the 15th century.

Dude, something's not right for sure.Even with that wonderful steel butt plate designed by the Marquis de Sade, you shouldn't get that beat up by that few rounds.

Your 4" groups seem pretty acceptable to me.My buddy is a Garand nut and we have spent quite a few hours working up loads for his rifles and the best we have managed to get is about 2" groups. This is after working with different bullet weights, styles;different charges of different powders, you can't play with the seating depth too much because of magazine length.Methinks you're doing fine my friend.I'm curious as to what type and brand of ammo you were shooting and whether you were using a rest or sandbags.

That's good to hear. I spent $500 on this beat-up looking old rifle that was rebuilt with new barrel, new gas tube, and maybe a new receiver. All the other parts were from WW2 and have traveled around the world.

Now that I have a chance to look at the target, 6 out of 8 shots were within 2" of the bullseye. The other 2 rounds were low and about 4" from the bullseye. This was done with the rifle resting on a bench rest and with iron sights. Target was at 100 yards. I think the sight on this particular rifle was zeroed at 200 yards, so I just aimed a bit low.

I don't know what type of ammo I used. I just picked up some surplus stuff at my local gunstore. I think they were South American manufacture military ball ammo.

I've always found the Garand very comfortable to shoot. Or should I say I felt very CONFIDENT with it. I had a little problem with my 03-A3 Springfield when I first bought it. Nobody told me that with that straight grip stock I was supposed to lay my thumb along the side.

Very embarrassing trying to explain a swollen upper lip from the thumb knuckle.

And for another post on ammo, yes the Garand and Springfield (and 1917 American "Enfield") used the .30-06 cartridge. Unfortunately you can't find National Match ammunition for it anymore. I only have one box of 20 left. But I have a case of AP that prints the same so I use that instead.

By the way, some Garands (for the Navy) were modified to take the .308 Winchester cartridge until enough M-14's were issued to replace them.

I never liked the Garand. I never shot it well, and I found the furniture bulky and awkward.
