    Sight calibration

I once replaced the two old FALs some farmer friends had with three captured AK-47s and 2 SKS carbines. When I went to fire them I found ALL of the guns sights were off. I had to pick a two foot square target at fifty meters before I could even see where the rounds were going!

No wonder they never hit me! I would have felt a lot braver if I had known how far off their sights (the enemies guns) were!:

    Well, it's not a REAL MP5. It's a BW5-FS, and it's only semi-auto.

Not as lucky as some of you good old boys as far as owning / firing assault rifles so all I can do is share my limited views based on what I HAVE used in combat.

The good old Fabrique National (semi-auto only) in 7.62 which later evolved to the R1 (with full auto option) was my first introduction to assault weapons.

Lovely weapon, accurate beyond 500meters (shooting range use only).

Heavy buggers to varry and likewise on first line ammo (7 X 20 rounds magazines)

On patrol I ALWAYS carried much more along with my trusty STAR 9mm P. (hehe)

Never had my rifle fail on me in combat ( I used to keep it clean), well nothing that a old mag out, new mag in and chamber round did not sort out anyhow.

Envied the larger magazine capacity that the gooks had (AK-47's with banana shaped mags).

Carried one for a while as well as my issued R1.

Military changed to R4 (.223 or 5.56) after a while .. one could carry lots more ammo .. weapon was lighter but even the insects deflected those rounds. :-)

Started carrying an AK along withthe R4 and managed, after a long time in country, to get back home in one piece.

The G3 (HK) which was issued to local tribal headmen was also a nice weapon but had a bad reputation amongst the locals. This was probably due to the fact that they saw no reason to clean the damn things.

Have used a variety of AK type weapons (captured during skirmishes/contacts), HK's, M16's (amazing what weaons we found these okes used) ...

I would equip my command at platoon level (excluding support weapons) with short barrelled 5.56 R5 typ weapons and longer barrelled 7.62 R1 type weapons.

Now the wife is calling for supper ... :-)

I still find it amazing that in the light of all these more modern weapons the MG3 continues to soldier on in frontline service of many nations.
If you want a slower ROF, just use an MG74.

The MG3 is being replaced for some applications by the MG4.

    hi there,

i found out, that the MG3 will be partially replaced by the MG4 of H&K. some special units like the Bundeswehr KSK unit are already equipt with it.

found it on wikipedia (english) by searching keywords like KSK or MG4.

    good day

AFAIK the MG3 will still serve as a GPMG in the infantry and while mounted on vehicles.

saw MG-3 in 2002 during our refreshment course . It was used to shoot some balloons . the 200-rd belt went through in mere seconds, then next belt was used to target a concrete pole - truly scary machine , concrete powder flew around - but then came the Carl Gustaf and pulverized the pole
If i only was so smart yesterday as my wife is today

Had a busy day yesterday. Did my training run, went to the marathon expo, remembered the gunshow in town, shot my bouts at the range, went to the show.

By passed the guns since I had enough (right! as if we always have enough guns), disappointed that the tactical shirt seller wasn't there (not to worry, found another source), and bought the minimal of ammo in .45, very little in .308 (just can't get the surplus anymore).

You know, my sister in law has offered to give me her father's reloading equipment. Maybe, even in my small apartment, I should look into it.

I think that occasionally most service guns should be looked at and seen if they can be improved or made more feasible for the current situation that that service faces. Most of the time this wouldn't result in drastic changes to the mechanicals of the gun but would often have things like equipment rails added or newer polymer stocks or reversible safeties.

Took my new DPMS AP4 M4-clone shooting yesterday. Took a little while to get used to the new A2-type sights (I've only shot A1 that are on my DPMS Panther Lite), but in the end I was very pleased by it. Finding ammo for a good price is getting increasingly difficult, however.

The problem is the Budeswehr bought only twenty 5,56 mm MG4 machineguns so far. The next batch, ca.800 MG4, will be delivered by end of the 2007.
    Whatever happens, we have got
the Maxim Gun, and they have not
