Do you think that the MG3 should be replaced or upgraded, seeing that it has been in an almost unchanged state since the MG42 was adopted and it lacks many of the features found on more modern GPMGs, such as rails and a carrying handle?

You might have a point. Everyone I've talked to whose ever had to carry a MG3 hated it. They still hate it years later. ALL of the gunners I know call the MG3 particularly vile names. Those names usually referring to damnation, intercourse, female dogs, sexual organs and or combinations of same.

    Could you give some reasons?

    Better you than me

The basic problem is that it is heavy for one man and it's ergonomically incorrect. I was told that there is no way a human being can carry an MG3 all day comfortably. It's just not designed with comfort in mind.

I know I felt my Uzi and ammo after walking in the bush all day. Imagine triple the weight, longer ,unbalanced, unwieldly and with lots of sharp pointy things on it.

    Mortar crews have it worse.

So you're basically saying it's just the carrying that's the problem. Any problems with actual use in combat?

Like the "Ma Deuce" it's a classic and efficient design. IMHO one of if not THE most effective MGs ever produced. I just don't want to be the guy that has to carry it! It's not perfect but I've used other MGs and the MG3 is my first choice.

Is there any way that the MG3 may be improved in your opinion?

    Gun design

Most of the complaints about the MG3 are about it's high ROF which is also it's greatest attribute. Changing the ROF changes it's effectiveness.

I suppose someone could try to make the gun more ergonomic. I would be surprised if no one has.

Gun design is not my discipline. I take (and use) them as I find them. In much the same way I'm not able to give a dissertation on microwave theory but I can still use the microwave oven.

Except for sights and grips I've never modified any weapon I've purchased or been issued.

One advantage of the MG3 over the MG42 is that the ROF can be changed with a heavier bolt and a recoil buffer. So if ammunition conservation is a problem, it can easily be solved.

I still find it amazing that in the light of all these more modern weapons the MG3 continues to soldier on in frontline service of many nations.

Hey, if you get it right, why mess with it? The Browning M2 .50cal comes to mind as well.

It most certainly does. Both are probably the best of their classes.

Went shooting today. Took the MP5. Of all the guns I've shot, the MP5 is the best for very quick target acquisition, and up close it's damned accurate.

Just found out my cousin bought an AK-47, Bulgarian made. He brought with him today, got to see it. Oak stock, real nice looking. The front sights are out though, said he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn until he got it calibrated.
I enjoy being wrong too much to change my mind.
