My condolences to the family and friends of the manikins who so bravely served their purpose and made the ultimate sacrifice, we will remember them.

My local public range has been kicking around the idea of singles nights. There certainly have been a lot of requests, mostly from the women who show up in groups for ladies' nights. One problem is that the range is full so often that people frequently have to wait for lanes anyway, so if you do a specialty night, then walk-ins have to wait even longer and get angry.

I was at a German equivalent to a gun show held by one of Germany's major retailers last weekend.

It was held at their central storage depot. I was amazed at what wasn't available, normally they have the returned stuff or things that they were discontinuing to run in their stores.

There were NO scopes whatsoever on offer, hand gun and rifle ammo selection was gone in no time, I was in the first batch in having arrived an hour early to stand around in line. They had some cheap deals on rifles and shotguns, even had some cheap hand guns, but nothing that I really needed, so I saved my money...

I eventually bought an air pistol and an air rifle and 5k of ammo for them to shoot in my cellar when the weather is crap, and figuring that the way that the price and availability of ammo is getting ridiculous I can still get some trigger time in.

    Thats all.

The ammo shortage is getting pretty ridiculous. Can hardly walk into a gun store, let alone a Wal-Mart, and find any pistol ammo at all. The ammo I have I now consider precious. Needless to say, it's making me make every shot count!

That's why my .22's are getting interesting, the few K of the good stuff that I have has become my mainstay. Just been in the cellar on my mini range shooting air pistol and rifle with the oldest son, 11years old and he is really getting good, not as good as I am (yet), but he hasn't had all the years of practice.

Yep, .22's have always been attractive as of late because you can literally shoot them all day without having to go without food for a week! Plus it's such a mild round that you can shoot it without ear protection and it has practically no recoil, which makes it more relaxing to shoot than, say, a full-powered rifle.

Ammo or Tequila? Ammo or Tequila? Foraging is just so much fun!

Bought about 1400 rounds of ammo last week. The overall cost, of how much I spent in two hours is bad enough, but what really brings tears to the eyes is how much I spent for two boxes of .380. There wasn't any in WalMart the day before.

Still, is does demonstrate a potential to a change of thinking. I use to think how great it was to only shoot two calibers and therefore, only have to carry those. But good salesmanship from my arms dealer has now increased that 4 calibers. With more on the search list, there is probably a greater potential that one will have at least something in the arsenal that is shootable.

I have a random thread on my patch of the HTF over at ARFCOM, Stole the idea from here and tacked it so that it doesn't disappear onto page whatever, most of the users havent quite got the idea over thare that instead of posting a thread "things to do while in ????", all they need to do is read the random thread... "you can lead a horse to water".

I'm hoping the panic-buying begins to taper off toward the end of the year and the manufacturers will be able to catch up a bit. I've got various calibers all on back order from different shippers. I'm assuming from your post that you bought those 1400 rounds at WalMart? You get a medal for good timing. Over-the-counter ammo--except for shotgun shells--is almost a thing of the past.

As far as tequila, I can personally attest to it's availability.

Yes, but there is a blight on the cactus from a few years ago and the cost went thru the roof!

I don't do WalMart for ammo; I have a favorite ammo runner for that. Dealt with him for years. I was at Wally World the night before looking for fuses when I drifted by the ammo section on my way out. A wife was looking for .380 for her husband (not to use on him, but to pick up for him).

The case of .45 (the other ammo was from other dealers) wasn't that expensive, relatively speaking. It was about the same cost of what my first case of .308, Israeli, from an expensive merchant cost me about 8 years ago......and up about $70 from what I paid for .45 then. It was reloads......but as I said, it was from my favorite ammo runner and he doesn't sell me bad stuff.

Yes, I believe that this ammo shortage is caused by the wars. Yes, I believe it is caused by panic buying in the new administration. And I believe it is caused by a change of procurement in foreign military sales.

But I think we are also spoiled from the beginning of the century when we could buy a case made in Portugal, Malaysia, or South Africa for $200. It was the stuff that was made for WWIII that never came, that was being sold. It was so available, we thought it might go on forever.

Back then, my calculations of shooting, of what I would need for resupply, was 1000 of .45, 400 of .308 a month. Once a week at the range, several different bouts.

Now, fortunally for me, even I can't maintain a training schedule like that. So for the rate I was buying, (and I wasn't buying at those calculation rates), I wasn't using as fast.

But somewhere in the back of the mind, we still think we can shop like that, like to think we can shop like that. After all, I bought a case of .45. Why? It wasn't panic ....... that's just the way I am conditioned to buy ammo.

I always buy in bulk if at all possible, as it brings the price down to reasonable levels or at least that used to be the case.

I can still remember reading somewhere on the web after Katrina that Katrina would have a grave effect on the price metals and thinking what a load of bull, but maybe the author of that knew a thing or two, and that coupled with the Obama-nation has had a catastrophic effect on all our lives, in so many ways.

I'm going to the range for the first time since my operation this morning, yes the GSG5 and Hamerli Trailside will be getting a few rounds through them, then a quick visit to my favourite gun smith, then home for lunch and a chill out.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

I don't think the price of ammo at this time is particularly related to military actions save for maybe .223 most civilian ammo is different than milspec ammo. Its also fairly peaceful worldwide at the present compared with most of the recent past. The tamil tigers aren't doing anything really interesting, and no real heavy shooting in the middle east. No major insurections in africa or south america and the balkens and ireland are actually relatively peaceful for a change.

This is panic buying, thing coupled with some changes in surplus ammo sales. a semi- unfriendly view toward guns in the media at current also isn't helping.
