Terror attack at IISc, Bangalore; 1 killed, 4 injured

    A Correspondent in Bangalore | December 28, 2005 21:15 IST
    Last Updated: December 29, 2005 01:04 IST

One person was killed and four injured after unidentified gunmen opened indiscriminate fire in the campus of Bangalore's Indian Institute of Science late Wednesday evening.

The deceased was Professor M C Puri, Professor Emeritus in the Mathematics Department of Delhi's Indian Institute of Technology. He had retired a few years ago.

The injured are Dr Vijay Chandru a senior scientist of IISc, Dr Pankaj Gupta of IIT, Vijay Patil, a lab assistant at the Dhanvanthri Kshetra, Cadilla Phamaceuticals Laboratory within the campus, and Dr Sangeetha. They were rushed to the M S Ramaiah Hospital. Their condition is stated to be critical.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when the victims along with other participants of an international seminar were moving from the J N Tata Auditorium towards the Satish Dhavan auditorium. Four to five people got off a white Ambassador car and started firing at random. The attackers allegedly used AK47s. An unexploded bomb was also reportedly found in the vicinity.

The guards, who fled as soon after they heard gunshots, said that they could not see how many assailants there were.

Except Patil, the other victims had been invited to participate in the three-day seminar organised by the IISc's Department of Management Studies. Patil had come out of his laboratory after hearing the commotion outside and hit by a stray bullet. The seminar is scheduled to be concluded on Thursday.

Police have arrived on the spot and are combing the area. Bangalore Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Singh said, "We can't say anything at this stage."

He said it appeared that an automatic weapon was used in the shooting. "There is no information on how they came and who they were."

Singh said one of the assailants was seen running with a gun for about 75 to 100 metres firing indiscriminately.

Karnataka Chief Minister N Dharam Singh described the incident as ''unfortunate'' and called for a high-level meeting Thursday morning to discuss the issue and security arrangements for the institute. A pool of blood was visible near the parking lot of the auditorium and a few other places within the campus.

Another function addressed by Infosys Chairman and Mentor N R Narayana Murthy had just concluded in the nearby T Chowdaiah Hall when the incident occurred.

Sources said the possibility of terror attack could not be ruled out given the nature of the automatic weapons used in the attack. A state-wide alert has been sounded.

Union Home Ministry officials held an emergency meeting after the suspected militant attack.

The Institute has been on the hit list of Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Tayiba and several alerts had been issued for safeguarding of the building earlier, official sources said.

The officials are also trying to ascertain whether the underworld had any role in Wednesday's incident as the main accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, Abu Salem is in Bangalore to undergo lie detector and brain mapping tests, sources said.

While there appears to have been a terrorist attack, it may be too early to tell if it is a terrorist attack.

    I would wait and see.

This is a clear case of economic terrorism. IISc & IITs are the institutes that have international reputation and have been instrumental in spearheading India's IT revolution. Morover, Bangalore is home to several International IT institutions like Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco. The attackis aimed at keeping them away from India and thus destabalising India's IT industry. Now, we all know who is behind these attacks. I am still surprised how our incompetent leaders have kept silent even after 20 hours of the incident. Guess we'll have to keep watching these sort of atttacks and burn our hearts. We have once again lost our face and the pigs are having the last laugh.

As they say, 'if you can't make it, then fate it'. But these buggers can't even fake it and hence these attacks. Simple strategy.. If we can't have it so won't you.

Bangalore terror suspects still at large

Police Thursday said they had gathered some information about the gunmen responsible for the attack at a prestigious science institute that killed a Delhi professor.

In Delhi, Home Secretary V.K. Duggal stopped short of terming the shooting as an act of terrorism, but Karnataka Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh said terrorists were responsible for Wednesday's strike at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

Karnataka police chief B.S. Sial said investigations were on the right track but there was no definite information on the suspected terrorists who were on the run.

"Apart from circumstantial evidence we collected from the scene of the attack at the J.N. Tata Auditorium in the IISc campus, we have some information on the suspects but can't share it," Sial told IANS.

According to a police official in Bangalore, investigations so far indicated three terrorists were involved in the attack. The third man was in a car that drove away from the scene after the shooting.

Duggal said no terrorist group had so far claimed responsibility for the attack that resulted in the death of M.C. Puri of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Delhi. Puri was killed when a man armed with an automatic weapon opened fire on scientists emerging from a seminar.

But Duggal admitted the attack had not targeted any specific person and was more like a "blind shooting". Authorities have so far found an AK-56 assault rifle and three grenades at the scene of the attack but these had no markings to indicate where they were manufactured.

Authorities also believe more than one person was involved in the attack and were waiting for four key eyewitnesses who were injured in the strike - Pankaj Gupta, Vijay Chandru, Vijay Patil and Sonia - to make statements to police.

Police will use information provided by them to prepare computer-generated picture of the man who fired at the scientists and his accomplices.

"We are waiting for the injured persons to recover completely. Since they are now out of danger, we intend to collect information when they are in a position to depose," Sial said.

Chief Minister Dharam Singh said: "Preliminary investigations by the city police and vital clues available so far indicate that it was a terror attack. We suspect it could be a handiwork of terror or militant organisations.

"We are yet to identify those behind the incident. No group or individual has claimed responsibility so far. Outfits like Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) may be behind the attack.

"The motive appears to create panic or fear psychosis in a city like Bangalore, which has gained global reputation as the nerve centre of information technology, biotechnology, defence, science and space activities."

Besides continuing combing operations in sensitive areas, police intensified mobile patrolling and monitoring of all exit and entry points in Bangalore.

"The entire state has been put on high alert. Since we sealed all exit points around the city within minutes of the incident, we suspect the terrorists may still be hiding either within the city or state," Sial said.

"We are also in touch with intelligence networks and police in neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. We have also asked for information from police in Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir."

Chief Minister Dharam Singh has announced the payment of Rs.500,000 as compensation to the family of Puri and Rs.100,000 each to the four injured people.

Bangalore no more a mere terror hideout

CHENNAI: For two decades, Bangalore was known to be an easy hideout for terrorists and underworld dons, especially those from Tamil Nadu. Most terrorists on the run were traced to Bangalore and killed in shootouts here by Tamil Nadu police. But the Wednesday shootout at IISc has proved that Bangalore is no more just a hideout.

Can one ever forget the encounter with Sivarasan and Subha, co-assassins of former PM Rajiv Gandhi, along with other LTTE members in a hideout in Konanakunte?

Sivarasan and company were not the first LTTE cadres to have taken refuge in Bangalore. Since the hard stand taken in Tamil Nadu against LTTE and its chief Villupillai Prabhakaran, the increasingly cosmopolitan Bangalore has provided an easy escape for the hunted Tigers. And experts believe that the city was used to hatch plots and re-group.

It is now that Islamic terrorism which is raising its head here. As recent as 2002, gangsters had freed two terrorist of Al Umma, Imam Ali and Hyder Ali, from police custody in Madurai

While Hyder was caught in two days at Sivaganga, Imam was killed along with four others in Bangalore by a special police team on September 29 that year.

"In addition to such political and religious reasons, their focus on South India also has a strong economic angle. That is the large concentration of IT and outsourcing companies, Indian as well as foreign, in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai.
