About Tiranga: (My avtaar) THE NATIONAL FLAG OF INDIA is in tricolour ( TIRANGA) of deep saffron (Kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal propotions.

The Indian flag is a horizontal tricolour in equal proportion of deep saffron on the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom. The ratio of the width to the length of the flag is two is to three. In the centre of the white band, there is a wheel in navy blue to indicate the Dharma Chakra, the wheel of law in the Sarnath Lion Capital. This center symbol or the 'CHAKRA', is a Buddhist symbol dating back to 200th century BC.

Its diameter approximates the width of the white band and it has 24 spokes, which intends to show that there is life in movement and death in stagnation. The saffron stands for courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation; the white, for purity and truth; the green for faith and fertility.

The design of the National Flag of India was adopted by India's constituent assembly on 22nd july, 1947. It's use and display are regulated by a code.

The flag symbolizes freedom. The late Prime Minister Pandit Nehru called it a flag not only of freedom for ourselves, but a symbol of freedom for all people.

Indian Court of arms and national MOTTO:

The National emblem of India is a replica of the Lion of Sarnath, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The Lion Capital was erected in the third century BC by Emperor Ashoka to mark the spot where Buddha first proclaimed his gospel of peace and emanicipation to the four quarters of the universe. The national emblem is thus symbolic of contemporary India’s reaffirmation of it’s ancient commitment to world peace and goodwill. The four lions(one hidden from view ) – symbolising power, courage and confidence- rest on a circular abacus. The abacus is girded by four smaller animals- guardians of the four directions: the lion of the north, the elephant of the east, the horse of the south and the bull of the west . The abacus rests on alotus in full bloom, exemplifying the fountainhead of life and creative inspiration.

The motto ‘Satyameva Jayate’ inscribed below the emblem in Devanagari script means ‘truth alone triumphs’.

Sure, I think it's a great idea for a thread. Tell us about your country's flag :)
“He was the most prodigious personification of all human inferiorities. He was an utterly incapable, unadapted, irresponsible, psychopathic personality, full of empty, infantile fantasies, but cursed with the keen intuition of a rat or a guttersnipe. He represented the shadow, the inferior part of everybody’s personality, in an overwhelming degree, and this was another reason why they fell for him.”

          Lets see here:

I'm guessing we borrowed the colors from the UK. The original flag had 13 stripes alternating between white signifying all thirteen colonies and red and thirteen stars inlayed on a blue background signifying the states in the union. The shape and number of the stars has changed as 37 additional states have been added.

True enough, but I'd love to hear about other countries. :)

Historically, the Pakistan Flag has associations with the flag which was hoisted at Dhaka (now Bangladesh) on December 30, 1906, when a meeting of the leaders representing the various Muslim political organizations of the South-Asian subcontinent was held and, as a result of the deliberations on the occasion, the All-India Muslim League was formed as the premier political organization of the Muslims. The flag used at Dhaka was green in color with a white crescent and star in the center. In the forty years of political struggle that followed the meeting at Dhaka, this flag was used continuously by the Muslim League as an emblem of the political aspirations of the Muslim community. When these aspirations were fulfilled and Pakistan was established, it was felt that it would be in the fitness of things to incorporate the motif of this flag into National Flag of Pakistan.
The National Flag of Pakistan is dark green in color with a white vertical bar, a white crescent in the center and a five-pointed star. The significance of the color and symbols used in the Pakistan Flag is as follows:

-The white and dark green field represents peace and prosperity.
-The crescent on the Flag represents progress.
-The five-rayed star represents light and knowledge.

Variations of that one are still used. The coast guard flag for instance.

                          Official New Zealand flag

Real New Zealand flag, that is the one we wear when we represent New Zealand.
