I voted Herodotus in the poll but my heart proclaims the glory of Caesar for not only did he conquer swiftly with the sword but he dictated for his secretaries on those campaigns to write with pen the ethnography, the living history, of some of those he conquered.
      Alea iacta est.

I voted Xenephon - he lead the 10000 (Anabasis) and worte the history.

Caesar did the same of course but his Conquest of Gaul is far more politcaly motivated.

Sima Qian, the grand historian of Han dynasty. His work, Shiji, considered the masterpiece of Chinese historiography. The book is composed of multiple biographies of influential people (some controversial), striked a balance between authenticity and literary aesthetics. And his life is an twisted but inspiring story on its own.
