OMG! I guess cases like this are in the whole of India, which is why cases have been spiking. Some of these F bureaucrats thinks they are above the law. Their jobs should be terminated, and they should be thrown into jail for life.

Keep a note of how long it takes for cases to double. If its every week we're still at stage 2. We want to keep things there and hopefully the 3 week shutdown slows it some.

The reason to stop the buses & trains was to prevent people going back to their village after the shutdown in the city.

There is no work in the city so people want to go back to the village. There are no cases in the villages yet. If it spreads in villages we will be in trouble.

For now cases are confined to cities only.

The informal sector will be the hardest hit. Informal makes up 90% of the work force.

The govt has to announce some sort of food subsidy so these people can eat.

That will be better than Rs.10k direct transfer to them for the next 21 days.

A lot of people have already migrated. The middle class who work in cities, as also the poor. This decision came late.

Agree with you. Here, even grocery shops are closed. Few opened in the morning, and police caned them. Profiteering is rampant. Every time there is a crisis, the Government warns traders not to sell above MRP, but this shit (Profiteering) happens all the time. Don't understand, if what the Government says is for - to be seen as pro poor, or they just do not care at all. Government told police to look out for profiteers, when police are the most corrupt lot after politicians.

            • Re profiteering:

There's a company in a rural village near the one my family is from. They produce clothing with about 1200 women working there for what amounts to minimum wage. About 100 million Euro turnover per year, not particularly large, mostly selling their goods in 46 local stores they operate. They got the great idea that they could shift part of their production over to cloth face masks. Which they're now selling online. To be fair with remarks such as "offer no medical protection" and "not certified for protection".

Planned production is 100,000 per week. Which they sell at 12 Euro each online. For a piece of cloth the size of a handkerchief. Earning them roughly exactly that amount that they can't sell any more since they had to close the shops they sell in.

              • Germany just issued an entry ban for seasonal migrant workers effective as of two hours ago. The harvest season for some crops (such as asparagus) is about to start. This affects about 300,000 migrant workers who travel to Germany around this time mostly from Eastern Europe; only about half of these have already arrived, partially due to closed borders along the way such as around Hungary.

To somewhat mitigate this seasonal migrant workers already in Germany are now allowed to work without social insurance contributions for a period of up to 115 days this year instead of the usual 70. The federal minister of agriculture is also proposing to allow those asylum seekers present in Germany who are banned from working (that's mostly South-Eastern Europeans...) to work in the fields - along with unemployed and workers out of a job due to corona. The farming lobby organizations are rather skeptical about that idea since the migrant workers are "faster" and more importantly a whole lot cheaper.

Migrant workers of this type in Germany are not the kind that travel on their own to another country to hire on; instead farmers, unless they're in large-scale operations, basically buy the labor from the same companies that they can e.g. rent tractors from. These companies then hire a few thousand people somewhere in a poor country and import them for a few weeks to months, distributing them to farms that buy them from them. Traditionally that's mostly Poles, Romanians and Bulgarians. They were looking into Ukrainians as cheaper labor a few years ago (and since 2017 are allowed to import them), but that's only a few thousand every year and the ones they get from there supposedly aren't all that focused on working.

                • Covid-19 comes to NE. 1 confirmed case in Manipur, another in Mizoram. To go to Mizoram, one has to halt at my location, then take a bus/sumo/cab. I'm locking my main gate from today. People flout Government's plea to stay indoors, and keep going outside for no reason at all. 5 entire flats have been quarantined here.

Ordered some hoodies and a running shoe from Amazon. Got a message yesterday that delivery would be delayed, and I can cancel those items if I so desire. No dates given.

Great idea. People who lead these businesses are usually the ones to thrive, in any condition.

Don't know if i'd call it profiteering so much as trying to stay alive.

Where they from outside the area ?

So that's what they do if they catch you outdoors with no good reason ? quarantine with a stamp on the hand and if you get caught breaking quarantine then its 6 months and a fine.

                        All three caught it abroad.

None of my Amazon orders due this week have arrived. I thought cargo was still being allowed but if people cannot get to their shops then they cannot pack anything. And couriers cannot deliver.

Whether amazon is considered as an essential service is yet to be worked out.

On the plus side, every bathroom in Germany is going to smell a lot better than it usually does this time of year.

Nah, that's way too elaborate. Simple double-layer piece of cloth, plain white, with a piece of metal to conform to the nose. I'd rate production cost well below 1 Euro even produced here with high labor costs.

This company was founded in 1919. They know how to adapt to crises impacting their business.

We'll just increase imports from Peru and China, that's where most of it comes from.

We're talking white asparagus btw, not that green asparagus that Americans eat. It's a premium product that retails for up to 20 bucks per pound, sold fresh in markets - especially around here (the self-proclaimed "asparagus capital" is 10 miles from me).

Lady doc advised me to reduce my salt intake & weight to counter my high BP. Also gave daily pills. I thought this is the reason I needed to get a body like Sylvester Stallone. Running early morning, lift weights in the evening. I planned my diet, and 90 days workout plan to flatten my tummy and gain some muscles. Then came corona, delayed deliveries, and I hit the complacent switch again. Well, I'll instead work on the website.
