NEW DELHI: Iran has scrapped a natural gas export deal with India after New Delhi voted in favour of a UN atomic agency resolution putting Tehran on notice over its nuclear programme, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Under a deal signed in June, India planned to import 5 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually for 25 years with deliveries from Iran starting in 2009.
Iran's decision to cancel the deal was conveyed to India's permanent representative at the International Atomic Energy Agency by Iran's ambassador in Vienna, Austria, The Hindu newspaper reported.
It followed India's decision to join the US, Britain, France, Germany and other nations in backing a resolution calling on the agency to consider reporting Iran to the UN Security Council for not complying with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
The report could not be independently verified. On Tuesday Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told reporters that Iran was considering reducing its trade with countries that voted in favour of Saturday's resolution, particularly India.
Separately, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported Wednesday that Iran's ambassador in New Delhi met Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran to convey his government's ``deep sense of hurt and disappointment'' over India's vote.
India has said it's vote helped avert a confrontation between Iran and the international community.
Earlier this week, Saran said India sided with the European countries after they agreed to dilute the resolution to delay referring Iran to the UN Security Council.
