  • Iran breaks gas deal

NEW DELHI: Iran has scrapped a natural gas export deal with India after New Delhi voted in favour of a UN atomic agency resolution putting Tehran on notice over its nuclear programme, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Under a deal signed in June, India planned to import 5 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually for 25 years with deliveries from Iran starting in 2009.

Iran's decision to cancel the deal was conveyed to India's permanent representative at the International Atomic Energy Agency by Iran's ambassador in Vienna, Austria, The Hindu newspaper reported.

It followed India's decision to join the US, Britain, France, Germany and other nations in backing a resolution calling on the agency to consider reporting Iran to the UN Security Council for not complying with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

The report could not be independently verified. On Tuesday Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told reporters that Iran was considering reducing its trade with countries that voted in favour of Saturday's resolution, particularly India.

Separately, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported Wednesday that Iran's ambassador in New Delhi met Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran to convey his government's ``deep sense of hurt and disappointment'' over India's vote.

India has said it's vote helped avert a confrontation between Iran and the international community.

Earlier this week, Saran said India sided with the European countries after they agreed to dilute the resolution to delay referring Iran to the UN Security Council.

However, the BBC's Frances Harrison in Tehran says Mr Aghamohammadi, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said Iran had no plans to withdraw from the gas agreement.

He said: "We have had good, deep relations with India in many fields and regional affairs and their behaviour at the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] was strange and we didn't expect them to vote against Iran."

But he added: "We don't want to review our current relations with India and their vote against Iran doesn't affect the gas project."

It is doubtful that Iran would have cancelled a deal worth billions with the world's second fastest growing economy. Sorry to blow the pipe.

Enough bickering already, it's a conflicting news report not personal attacks. If it were possible online..you'd both get a butter cookie shoved in your mouth. :)

Nope its not conflicting, the Iranians have denied the claims floating around the Indian media OFFICIALLY.

          cheers

In any event India does not need Iran, we will find other supliers willing to sign a multi billion dollar contract if need be although due to proximity Iran was the best choice.

At any rate posting a news article isn't a personal attack, since Platinum didn't even write it, and it was especially not written by Platinum to besmirch you. :)

But its the wave of thread topics that gives it away. :)

For example take this thread, wab is not a news service, if one creates a thread then surely he wishes to engage in a discussion, had he made some comments after the article for one to talk about, it would have been fine.

              Regardless
              let the bickering stop.

What rape threads? What retaliation? Whose my CO?

Nevertheless we'll find out in a few days how far will that pipeline go. I wish the Iranians could see this HUGE smirk on my face, since they aligned with India and were bending over backwards for them, taking some major anti-Pakistan moves.

India took a decision in it own national interests. It needed power. The US offer means India will meet its own power needs through the nuclear tech the US will give them in the future. Iran vs US, it really wasn't a difficult choice for India.

I wish the Iranians would see that, given the fact that it was Pakistan which installed anti-shai Talibans, it was Pakistan which went hand in hand with America even when Iran was under US sanctions, and its in Pakistan where Shia's are getting slaughtered left and right. I really wish they would see your smirk ;)

'Friends not be judged by a single action': Iran

Indicating that there was no bitterness in Tehran over India's vote against it in IAEA, Iran tonight said bilateral agreements, including LNG and gas pipeline projects, are "still in force", maintaining that a "friend" should not be judged by a "single action".

A day after Iran threatened to review its economic ties with all 22 countries that voted against its nuclear programme, its Embassy issued a statement here saying that its agreements with India were "passing through normal process".

"Regarding the news published in a section of media about the possibility of the LNG deal and the gas pipeline project being called off, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran declares that the agreements arrived at between the two countries are still in force and passing through their normal process," the statement said.

Quoting Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani, the statement said he described India as a "friend" but added that "we did not expect India to do so (vote with the resolution at the IAEA).

"(But) I believe friends should not be judged by a single action." Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, said "Iran enjoys friendly relations with India." Quoting Larijani, it said the resolution passed by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) against Iran "lacks legal foundation" and that Tehran expects the member states to review the resolution.

The Embassy statement puts at rest speculation about the five-million tonne a year LNG export deal beginning 2009 and the 21 billion dollar gas pipeline project from Iran to India being scrapped by Iran in view of India's vote. Earlier, the government also asserted that it has not been given any indication by Tehran to review its long-standing cooperation which was in the interest of both countries.

"We have been given no indication in interactions (with Iranian officials) of Iran's intentions to review its long-standing and extensive cooperation with India which is of benefit to and in the interest of both countries," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej said in response to questions.

Sarna said Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran had yesterday explained the background to India's decision during a meeting with Iranian Ambassador S Z Yaghoubi.

The importance which India attaches to maintaining traditionally close relations with Iran have also been reiterated, he said.

Yes it was a difficult choice for Pakistan. They abstained from voting.

                        Cheers!...on the rocks!!

All those moves were in Pakistan's national interest. They were meant to harm Iran in anyway, just that their by-products did. Iran's given India AirForce bases to attack Pakistan. Things like that doesn't make us think twice about Iranian concerns when it comes to our National interest.

But the people still favor Iran. They think we should get involved in their problems and help them sort it out and bla bla bla. Perhaps there's some sense in that now since relations are mending after a decade of bitterness.

Yeah! A nuclear Iran's bad considering the type of government that exists there today. But they also have OIL! The US is giving India its nuclear tech, to meet its energy needs, not Pakistan. We're still dependent on their oil. At the pace Pakistan's growing, we'll be thrown into the stone ages if we don't meet our energy needs.

Pak government has been proposed a plan to build 13 new nuclear powerplants all around the country and several hydropowerplants. Power generation is way top on our list of priorities.

                            Breaking news!!!!

Iran's parliament just cancelled Irans membership in the nuclear proliferation treaty as well as ties with the IAEA.
Meaning nuclear inspectors now have to get out of the country.

                            The crisis is deepening!!!
