  • A Diplomatic Coup?

    Statesman News Service
NEW DELHI, Sept. 28. — With Iran formally assuring India on the $22 billion LNG supply deal from 2009, the top brass in the petroleum and external affairs ministries are more concerned over the 2.5 MMTPA deal for which initial negotiations had begun and the Indo-Pak-Iran gas pipeline, talks for which are already in progress.
Delhi has initiated diplomatic measures with Teheran to avoid further bitterness after India’s “yes” vote at the IAEA. Yesterday, the foreign secretary had met the Iranian Ambassador and explained the background of India’s decision to vote in favour of the EU-3 resolution at the IAEA. “We have been given no indication in these interactions of Iran’s intention to review its long-standing and extensive cooperation with India which is of benefit to and in the interest of both countries,” said the MEA spokesman.
The spokesperson had earlier said that India was aware of the remarks made by the Iranian Ambassador to the Indian Ambassador in Vienna, as well as the remarks made by the Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson concerning economic cooperation with countries that had voted in favour of the IAEA resolution.
Teheran had expressed its disappointment to Delhi following its vote at the IAEA. However, it today clarified that no decision had formally been taken on the $22 billion Indo-Iran LNG deal. An Iranian wire service, Mehr News Agency, quoted the managing director of National Petrochemical Company, Md Reza Nematzadeh, as saying that “petrochemical agreements with India will definitely be implemented in due time.” The report said Mr Nematzadeh maintained that “India is a friend of Iran and the differences of views between Iran and India do not affect the cooperation between the two countries”.
Senior officials of the petroleum ministry are not unduly worried about the $22 billion deal. What is worrying them is the future of the 2.5 MMTPA deal which was at a nascent stage. The ambitious 5 MMTPA LNG deal between India and Iran in June last year is important not only for the country’s energy security but is also the most cost-effective deal. The price agreed for the supply is little over $31 per barrel for LNG for 25 years as against the prevailing price of over $60 per barrel for crude oil in the global market.
The 5 MMTPA deal is yet to be ratified by the board of National Iranian Oil Co., the firm that is going to execute it.
Reacting to media reports that the LNG deal and the gas project may be called off, a press release issued by the Embassy of Iran said this evening: “The agreements arrived at between the two countries are still in force and passing through their normal process”.

When this whole thing started some said India had goofed up voting against Iran and some said India had finally gotten it right.
With Iran we have deep historical ties, energy source and security and finally a window to flex our muscle into the greater middle east and central Asia.
With the USA , a possibility of a tie which could make history this century with both countries benefitting immensely.
Has this Commie-loving B*stard government actually gotten it right, have they just managed to pull the diplomatic coup of the century.
To satisfy the US and also maintain its friendship with Iran?

Deal is not off, it was just speculated. Iranian Ambassador to India and NSC Secretary from Iran has said that the deal will not be off, as this single vote will not blow the friendship between two friendly nations. ;)
