  • Battleship Tactics

    Hello everyone,

I've created this thread to explain my Big Battleship Doctrine in a more advanced light concerning tactics.

I'm going to post a combat scenario or two to explain how a modern advanced battleship can or will wage war.

We will use my Exalibur class Advanced Battleship as the example BB.

    U.S Navy 21st Fleet (10 ship group)
    Fleet:
    x1 Nimitz Class Carrier
x2 LCS Class Littoral Attack Craft
    x3 DD(X) Class Multimission Destroyers
    x2 Exalibur Class Advanced Battleship
    x1 Virginia Class Attack Submarine
    x1 SeaWolf Class Attack Submarine

    AC carries:
    x20 F-35 Join Strike Fighters
    x36 F/A-18 Super Hornets

    Enemy Fleet (15 Ship Group)
    Fleet:
    x2 Kuznetsof Class Carrier
    x4 Mirage Class Patrol Boat
x5 Kirov Class Heavy Missile Cruiser
    x2 Type 11540 Frigates
x2 Akula II Class Attack Subamrines

    Each AC has:
    x16 Mig-29K Fulcrum
    x12 Su-27K Flanker
(I'm being VERY generous with this fleet fitting, the Russians only have 2 Kirov class cruisers in service)

Combat Scenario: The Russians work with the Chinese and when the Chinese make a rush for Taiwan Russia takes their side. Russian naval forces move into the North Atlantic and Baltic. Thats where the 2 fleets spec'd above meet.

    Summary FAQ:

Q; Where can I find information on your BB designs?
A: In my Big Battleship Doctrine thread.

Q: Why didn't the U.S.N aircraft fire their anti ship weaponry?
A: Because it wasn't neded. It was already a losing battle for the Russians.

Q: The BB's didn't use their guns that much, so why have them?
A: Because if cruise missiles had been used, then it would have cost far more money, and missiles are more likely to be intercepted. The Russian ships had already mostly ran out of cruise missile ordinance at that point, so why use expensive ammo? And also, the BB's were responsible for most of the early round kills, with their ability to missile swarm the enemy fleet. By using their 16 and 5" guns the two BB's saved about $30+ million dollars in cruise missiles.

Q: How long did this scenario procced over?
A: The scenario reads as if it took only ten or so minutes. But in truth it took place over hours. As most modern naval battles would.

Okay. About the tactics, I'm thinking the plan of attack above is a great opener. It has the firepower advantage in every way. And it's an enormous force multiplier. The missile swarms my two BB's opened up with is a must. Catching the enemy with brute force is sometimes very effective.

Also, I think they used their guns at the right time. Does anyone agree?

Although I'm not sure whether it detached at the right time for it's closing and evasive warfare tactic.

As a BB supporter trying to find the best tactics, I challenge anyone here to design a 10 ship fleet (modern) to take on my BB fleet. The BB really is superior to any ship on the sea today.

Looks very accurate, but what if the Russians have an Elf Magician 6th level with them ?

              Fleet Characteristics:

              Carrier Group-
              x1 CVN Class Aircraft Carrier
              x4 CG(X) Class Cruisers
              x2 BB(X) Class Advanced Battleships
              x2 BC(X) Class Advanced Battlecruisers
              x4 DD(X) Class Destroyers
x3 Virginia Class Nuclear Attack Submarines
              x1 Ohio Class SSGN submarine
              x2 LCS class Attack ships

              Surface Combat Group-
              x5 DD(X) Class Destroyers
              x5 LCS class Attack ships
              x4 BC(X) Advanced Battlecruisers
              x2 Virginia Class Attack subs

              Tactical Battleship Group-
x1 BB(X2) Illinois Class Advanced Battleship
              x4 BB(X) Class Advanced Battleships
              x4 DD(X) Class Destroyers
              x2 SeaWolf Class Attack Subs
              x1 Ohio Class SSGN
              x3 LCS Attack ships

              Submarine Wolfpack-
              x6 Virginia Class Attack subs
              x4 SeaWolf Class Attack subs
              x2 Ohio Class SSGN

The reasoning behind the BB(X) and variations is the fact that a Nimitz cost 13.4 billion dollars. The idea is to build fewer ships for the future USN, so fewer more capable carriers, combined with economical BB(X)'s.

BB(X) and it's variations are all force multipliers, so there use is not simply limited to shore support. Guided munitions now have the capability of striking tactical targets. Making sea warfare using guns possible once again.

And it's far more difficult to intercept a Mach 5+ artillery shell than a Mach 2+ missile. Or a subsonic tomahawk for that matter. Thats why I believe in a combined doctrine, big guns and advanced missiles have no competition.

Another reason for the BB(X) is the future of rail gun technology.
